" Suitable for all "

Stayed in a ground floor studio in July/August. Grounds are pretty and well cared for. Impressed with accomodation which was clean and spacious. Bathroom newly fitted, but we were one of the unlucky ones who had a kitchenette desperately in need of a refurb. Just two cooker rings, fridge with a dodgy door, a kettle and a sandwich maker. (The things I can now cook on a sandwich maker you wouldnt believe.)Apartments are central so no need to walk miles to find anything you need. Air conditioning is a must but costs 55 euro a week. Pool shared with the apartment block next door so be prepared to get up before 8am if you want a sunbed. Beach ajoins the apartments so again no need to walk far though the sand isn't the nicest. Was surprised how rough the sea can be - there is a lifeguard (several days the red flags were up). Platanias is pretty. Just one long street with shops, bars and restaurants. Good kareoke bar across the road from apartments. Found a large hotel to the right of the apartments that did fab meals overlooking the sea and more reasonable than most restaurants. A trip into Chania (pronounces Hania) is a must. Buses stop just across the road and follow the coast - very pretty. Steer clear of restaurants on the harbour as they are very expensive! Happy hour at lunchtime at Sofia and at 4pm next door at Ideal! We didnt take in any organised excursions but a tractor/train runs from next door to apartments - although - the thought of 3/4 hours in the heat on bench seats didnt appeal.
All in all a good holiday, Crete is very pretty, plenty for all ages. The only downside is the exchange rate. Crete isnt the cheapest place in the world and with the poor £ to euro we found prices expensive.

Advice: Well worth a visit but take plenty of money

Activities: Loved Chania - even the bus journey

Good for: Beach

" My husband and I have just returned... "

My husband and I have just returned form the Sofia Studio's although the weather wasn't too great cloudy most days but also cold from the wind coming off the sea we had a great holiday. Having read previous reviews I was hoping the apartments were going to be clean but basic, well they were better than that, we opted for a 1 bedroomed apartment which was really spacious plain but nice lounge, basic kitchen of which we've come to expect in Greece but the bathroom was superb, yes I know it's not usual for Greece but it had a full shower unit with powerful shower, corner tray with sliding glass doors, decent sink with side shelves for all toiletries and plenty of hot water, great! Its a small complex with a great pool directly on the beach. Sunbeds were a bit thin on the ground round the pool(free) but plenty on the beach(4 euros each with free umbrella). You get waiter service from Victor whilst on the beach no need to move an inch. The bar area is pleasant enough great views of the sea, the food is good too. I'm a vegetarian and a very fussy eater but I loved the vegeatable pie Bureka basically its sliced potatoes with courgettes and cheese, no pastry, plus my husband loved their Kleftico which was very different to how he had had it before, it comes in a greaseproof paper bag with tender lamb, potatoes and cheese. Anna who works there is brilliant a bit mad and dippy but it all adds to the fun, a word of warning though she mans the reception in the evening, we asked her to exchange some money one night and she got it all completely wrong so check your money!
Plantanes it a small resort but there are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, shopping is basic all the usual tourist tacky offerings. We found the best restaurant to be Mylos which is just across the street a little to the left from Sophias, we ate there twice the food and service was excellant. We found the resort to be expensive small beers 4 euros, gin & tonic 5 to 6 euros but I think thats typical of europe now.
As the weather was bad we took the little train up in the hills visiting 7 villages, what a waste of time that was there's nothing to see they stop off at someone's house who stands on the front selling oranges and homemade raki, then it moves on to a scruffy bar where a grumpy bar tender reluctantly sells you a drink, my husband asked for a mataxa with his coffee to warm him up and they didn't have any!! All that for 14 euros each. All in all it was a very good holiday and we would return there.

Absolutely fantastic. Sofia and her family were all wonderful. Apartments cleaned daily and towels twice a week. Walks right onto the beach. Lots of places to eat very close. Would definitely recommend!

" Sofia Beach Studios were really nice... "

Sofia Beach Studios were really nice and everything was nice and clean. The pool taverna food was good cooked by Maria all freshly cooked from recipes handed down from her family.

Vaggiliss her husband runs the pool area and the bar taverna, which is 3 steps onto the beach and 7 yards and you’re in the sea.

Opening the patio door each morning with a breath taking view of the pool and the sea over looking main land Greece was a view to die for. We ate at their pool taverna one night and had Stiffardo with all the trimmings with the pool lit up and the taverna pool bar with soft lights and candles sitting with our meal and wine and lagers watching the sunset, not to be missed.

They do full English breakfast also toasties and a full range of snacks or you can have a main meal any time of the day, there’s tea coffee and a good range of soft drinks and a fridge full of ices. Lazing round the pool cooling off with ice cold beer. There is a Supermarket with everything you need 2 mins stroll.

The shop keeper is called Maria and speaks excellent English round the corner to that is the Famous Karaoke pub also run by a Maria and her husband Takis and family, a good cheap night she is very warm and welcoming and very entertaining with Greek dancing.

There are many bars and restaurants to choose from. You have a great choice either you can rave it up at the barn or 42nd street area for the young at heart wanting a lively time or at either side of these areas there is Greek dancing with Many family pubs bars and restaurants pool tables sport on TV or films shown, and two games arcades which are newly built.

So you have the best of both worlds. To finish off you can take some towels and walk along the beach and you can use any of the pool bars along the way and they are most welcoming. Hope this review helps anyone visiting Kavos.

" Went to Malia on the 11th July 06 and... "

Went to Malia on the 11th July 06 and stayed in Sofia studios. There was 8 lads including myself that went, and the studios are a lot better than I thought they where going to be.

They are basic but everything you need is there, and we got lucky as me and my m8s got the biggest rooms there! Although the rooms only got cleaned once when we where there which wasn’t ideal, and you have to provide your own toilet paper.

The security guard is annoying as he follows you everywhere and he tries to charge people to bring girls back. If you’re going 18-30s don’t do all the excursions with them! Waste of money totally, do it yourself and save loads of money.
