If you are a heavy sleeper then you will have no problems with this hotel BUT if you are a light sleeper like me or are traveling with children this may not be ideal. It is an old building and the hallways are tiled and all connect at a central (tiled) courtyard. we were on the 4th floor and could hear people talking in the lobby and restaurants below. there are very heavy fire doors to block the noise from the courtyard and I would advise closing these before you go to bed but they will be opened again by morning by staff and it will not help the noise from any of the other guests that stay on your floor. My husband slept fine most of the time but on the nights that there were loud drunks in the building even he had trouble. I was a zombie the whole time.
The location is great, most of the staff were helpful and the room was clean. Our room didn't have a window with a view, all we could see was the inside courtyard.
Save the visiting the port until Sunday since everything else is closed that day but the port stays open for tourists.

This is a great hotel if you want to be in the centre of Madrid and want to be on the Gran Via.
It was close to all the local nightlife and you can chose from any number of bars, cafes, and restaurants. The staff were friendly and all the room facilities were excellent.
The Hot Buffett breakfast was not particularly hot but tasty!
Madrid itself seems to lack the continental cafe culture of Barcelona but the hotel was very welcoming and were happy to give you information on local events and sights.

Fantastic, we stayed in Hotel Espana, after booking the rooms online and not really knowing what to expect. However on arrival, considering the price we could not believe how good it was and in such a central location.
This time of year Barcelona is warm, so the hotel location allowed us to take advantage of the Ramblas shopping centres, the beach and be close to the metro.
The only down side was the petty crime, as one of our party got his wallet stolen and we saw a similar situation occur to another tourist. So keep well alert at all times. Other than that the culture is incredible, if somewhat a shock concerning how little shops are open over the weekend. But there is much to see and do it is incredible.
Highly recommended.

My son and I travelled to the Espana Hotel in Barcelona on 12th October 2005. The hotel is approx 50yards off the main street in Barcelona, Las Ramblas.
The hotel is ideally situated, and you are paying for the location rather than the luxury, hence the 2 star rating.
We found the hotel clean, busy and the staff friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was ok and served until 10.30am, they provided us with a luggage room that we could use all day that we found helpful as we had an evening flight home.
Overall I would recommend the hotel, and am returning with friends for my birthday in November.

The hotel room was basic, but the hotel was in a central location and so there was no problem getting anywhere on foot. We went for three nights, mid-week. the breakfast was continental and was sufficient but not alot of effort was made really. it could have been better. the price we paid for the hotel was suitable for what we got.
Barcelona is a very interesting city. the old town part is very exciting there are lots of tiny streets with little shops to browse round, you can easily get lost in the maze of streets if you do not have a map with you which adds to the adventure. there are plenty of museums and things to look at and there are some lovely seafood restaurants and Tapas bars. all the bars we went into were completely different. we thoroughly enjoyed our evenings out while we were there.
the weather was extremely cold in January so make sure you take plenty of warm clothes.
the modern part of the city was full of designer shops such as Gucci and D&G, therefore we did not dwell very long there.
if you are looking for a bargain few nights away and for somewhere just to sleep, the hotel is ideal but if you are indulging yourself a little, don’t stay at this particular hotel, there are plenty more expensive ones in the centre of the city to stay at.

Amazing. The flight was amazing (With Iberia). WE landed, got transferred straight to the hotel. The room was top standard and the entertainment on offer every night was second to none. The tours of the city were great.
It was an amazing week. The city is beautiful and the local people are amazing. The hotel is 100% Spanish and henceforth, we get a taste of Spanish culture: food, service, entertainment, etc.
