Riu Ferrara Hotel Reviews
" We stayed in a one bedroom apartment... "
Submitted By: Snickers-888Therefore we were classed as self-catering. Our apartments kitchen had a cooker hood over the 2 ringed hotplate the size of mount Everest, but thats all there was...a 2 ringed hotplate oh yes and a coffee machine. No kettle, no toaster, no grill, no oven nor a microwave. So I am grateful I hadn't planned on doing any catering!
The apartment was lovely and big although our view was very poor.
We did the spanish horse & flamenco night excusion and because it was a bargain price I was concerned it wouldn't be up to much...It was delightful.
The hotel stipulates no reserving of sunbeds......towelled draped sunbeds were everywhere from 8am onwards. No airbeds in the pool....airbeds were everywhere. I always live in hope that rules are there for a reason.
Out of the gates of the hotel & there is the beach...lovely. Not the nicest beach in the world, but certainly nice enough.
The resort is very tired and non-Spanish though which is a shame. It is also very small.
We had a very pleasant holiday but I wouldn't return to Torrox.
We were very annoyed at our rep though, who told us that despite our coach pick up time being 7:45am we must be waiting at 7:30am outside the hotel, because if they arrive early they will go without us and we would have to make our own way to the airport. If this were the case, why not have the pick up time as 7:30am?.....the minibus actually came at 7:55am!

Submitted By: Mrs L ARCHERThe pool area was a dream and we soon realised to reserve a sunbed, you had to get up pretty early(7.30am) and place your towels in the desired spot! However, no-one complained and there seemed to be plenty to go round. A lovely touch whilst you're lying (melting) in the sun - the bar staff bring round fresh melon or cool samples of apple juice to refresh you!
We had stayed further south on previous holidays, taking in the tours of the area, so decided to use local buses this time. These were not very reliable or well marked, resulting in me having to ask the destination in Spanish each time. We did go to Torre del Mar market on the Thursday and enjoyed browsing around at the many bargains.
This is still a very underdeveloped resort and the hotel is the only one (and 4* at that), in the area which we felt left the guests in a vulnerable position. In hindsight, we realise that it was an easy target for the pickpocket who stole my husband's wallet from his secure pocket. We discovered that other guests had been targetted too by this Spanish looking 50-55yr old man who pretends to use his mobile, bumps into you and by 'trying to apologise' proceeds to very professionally remove your wallet.
Disturbingly, the hotel could not assist as they say the local police do not speak English, therefore you need to hire an interpreter and then travel up to Torrox town inland, finally travelling to Torre del Mar to have the report logged. So PLEASE be warned, this is a great hotel, but only carry small amounts of cash, leaving all else in your safe. We were fortunate that we had done this, but it left us feeling very vulnerable for the rest of our holiday.
I don't think we'll be back to this resort, which is a pity as we loved the hotel.
" Simply wonderful! This is the 3rd... "
Submitted By: Mrs F BurdettThe staff are fantastic ambassadors for Riu - speak english to a high degree, although we liked to converse as best we could in the local dialect so not to appear typically English and ignorant!! Nothing is too much trouble, on arrival you are greeted with champagne, juice or water and smiles! You even receive a phone call shortly after entering your room to ensure that all is okay!
The food is simply wonderful....so much choice every night, suitable for kids too. We were a party of 4 adults (2 over 65yrs) and 1 child of 4yrs and ate well each night. There are 2 sittings for your evening meal - 6.30 and 8.30.
The pool area is large and lots of sunbeds are available and i am afraid we got into the habit of taking towels down early to reserve the spot near the shallow end of the pool!! There were lots of kiddies there and there is daytime entertainment too plus a small playgorund and small splash pool. There is also an indoor pool but we visited this once just for a look...it was quite cold and it was a shame to be inside!
The beach and promenade are just outside the electronic gates at the rear of the hotel and the sand is quite dark - quite pebbly too but safe.
There are lots of restaurants and a few shops on the promenade which sell lovely souvenirs or papers, water, crisps etc and not too overpriced either!
We always book this hotel directly via www.riu.com and book flights seperately too, a taxi from Malaga airport cost us €71.50 on arrival and only €55 on the way back - there are always so many taxis waiting outside malaga airport. We saved on average about £250-£300 booking a break independantly.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone - the evening entertainment does start late at night 21.45 but my little girl managed to stay up for 3 consecutive nights to watch dancers, flamenco shows and musicals, which I add are very professional. There is also a mini kids disco at least 5 nights a week and starts at 8.00pm each night.
The hotel is popular with German & Spanish visitors but we did notice there were more Brits this year than previous years.
The outdoor restaurant serves drinks all day and food 12.30 - 3.30 and again, very nice and not too expensive either.
Overall, we love the Riu service, style and price and will continue to go back year after year - give it a go.......

Submitted By: Ms A WrightStaff were very friendly and didn't laugh at our attempts at speaking the language; spacious and clean room with two balconies and a spacious clean bathroom (accommodated 2 girls getting ready for a night out!) Food was lovely and varied and the poolside was tremendous....we're both well travelled and have stayed in many hotels across the world and we both felt very spoilt at the Rui.....a thoroughly enjoyable stay.....so much so, I'm heading back there in a few weeks with some more girlies!!!

Submitted By: Mr Sj HerbertAround the corner, set back from the front is Alberto and his Manikin bar. A fantastic host and always a "no problem" from him. His fayre is a treat too, from his steaks to his noodles, but you must try his rack of ribs before returning. Nearer is Cafe Luis, a Spanish bar, with a friendly atmosphere and a host always welcoming.
We can't wait to book a return visit.
" Wonderful Christmas location to wind... "
Submitted By: Mr P BeasleyDaytime and evening entertainment was great and varied. The hotel is very, very child friendly with a great kids entertainer who is fluent in about 8 languages-they follow him around like the Pied Piper, he also does an excellent job as Entertainment Compare in the evenings.
The general ambiance of the place was very impressive and the decor in the public areas was worthy of more than the 4 stars. The indoor pool was adequate, and frequently used, as at this time of year the outdoor pool is only enterable in a Wet Suit!!
An everlasting memory will be entering the reception after a beachside walk on the evening of the 27th December and being greeted by an old lady playing Christmas Carols on a Harp!! The clientèle is a cosmopolitan mix of English, French, German Spanish and Dutch, who all mix well together.
On the downside, be prepared to be "Fleeced" if you want entertaining on New Year's Eve, as you have to "Buy" a table-and they're not cheap. The English also get bundled into a separate room for the festivities on this night, which is disappointing, as we love to mix with other nationalities-perhaps that's because of past experiences they've had!!
Torrox Costa is a sleepy location, and it can be a bit of a problem finding a restaurant open, but all this adds to the serenity and peace of the place-there are no Yobboes here!! The beach is great for long quiet walks at this time of year, either easterly or westerly.
All in all a great place- as good if not better than other Riu's we've been to. Already booked for Christmas 2007- but for 3 weeks this this time.
" Overall an excellent hotel,... "
Submitted By: Miss L LumleyChoice of apartment or hotel room, apartments particularly suitable for families we had a two bedroom and had ample space.
Food was good, although probably B&B would be sufficient. Childrens club was available which was good, particularly 'Audrey' resident rep.
The pool area is lovely and very safe for children as it slopes gently into the main pool at one end, and there is also a children’s pool available. Would definitely return.
" Hotel is situated in Torrox Costa... "
Submitted By: Miss A PowellUnfortunately, when we were there the beach front was being renovated and there were dump trucks running up and down the beach continuously throughout the day.
The hotel is clean and of a high standard of decorations. Although it is a big hotel, it never felt overcrowded.
The food was excellent with a variety of choice. I am a coeliac sufferer and found the choice of gluten free foods excellent although I did ask the chef for assistance in the gluten free meals and after taking his advice and eating the meals he showed, I was ill.
After this I chose for myself and was symptom free.
The only grouch I would have about this hotel is that the administration staff very often would talk amongst themselves, leaving people waiting at reception. Some of the male admin staff could be quite abrupt.
The catering staff were extremely polite and spoke an excellent standard of English.
Thomsons were no help and I will not be holidaying with them again. The rep only came to the hotel on a Monday between the hours of 6 to 8, and when we showed interest in the best way to visit Tangiers, she couldn't be bothered to sell us one of their trips.
I heard many complaining about Thomson’s and their lack of assistance during my stay.
Tips - hire a car and go to Alhambra Palace in Granada, it is amazing. An awesome sight!

Submitted By: Mrs C HowarthIt is a lovely hotel in a good position. The dining room was cramped for the number of guests it catered for and the tables were very close together, definitely no intimate meals here! We tended to go into breakfast before the rush started so were able to find a table easily. When we first arrived we were initially allocated first sitting which was a bit too early for us at 6 pm (the later sitting was fully booked up) but after a couple of days we were able to change to the later one.
The choice of food was excellent at both dinner and breakfast. The rooms were in excellent order and very clean with maid service every day, we paid the supplement for a sea view which was well worth it.
Torrox Costa as a resort doesn't have a lot to offer but the promenade is lovely and the sunsets are wonderful. We used to have a stroll and a pre-dinner cocktail at one of the many bars along the sea front.
The entertainment team worked very hard but generally it was of the usual hotel standard.
Reception staff were excellent and spoke very good English! A welcoming touch was being offered a glass of champagne whilst checking in.
The outdoor pool was very large but unfortunately the indoor pool was very small for the size of the hotel.
I celebrated a birthday whilst we were staying there and was very surprised to receive a bottle of champagne in the room and another bottle of champagne at our table in the dining room. How did they know?
I would definitely recommend this hotel and is of the excellent standard which we have come to expect of the Riu hotels. We are going to the Hotel Riu Monica to celebrate the New Year this year so hope we aren't disappointed!
" My husband and I picked this hotel... "
Submitted By: Mrs J BarkerWhen we arrived at the Riu Ferrara the first impression was that we had made the right choice for our special occasion. The check in service was great and made even better with a glass of champagne.
We requested a room with a double bed and a high floor, which is exactly what we got. Our room was in one of the towers and had a private balcony. This proved to be a stroke of good fortune as the weather was sunny and bright blue skies but somewhat windy. Our balcony allowed us to sunbathe all week as it blocked out all of the wind.
The resort of Torrox Costa is not the prettiest of towns and not the liveliest. There are a few bars and restaurants along the promenade and a few dotted around the hotel out on the main road.
The standard of accommodation at this hotel is luxurious. The rooms are cleaned every day and are immaculate throughout.
The only downsides we encountered during our stay were in the restaurant. You are allocated a table on arrival which you must use every evening. The restaurant can get extremely busy and very crowded, at times you can feel that you are almost sitting on the lap of the person next to you as the tables are so close! If you are hoping for a romantic quiet meal for 2 then you may be disappointed.
The presentation of the food was excellent although at times the taste was very bland and the choices were often repetitive. A useful tip for breakfast is to get to the restaurant early as only a handful of others are there which makes it a more pleasurable experience. Meal times were also somewhat restrictive, 6pm early sitting and 8pm late which you are allocated on arrival, although I believe this can be changed.
The lobby bar area would benefit from some additional seating for the times before and after dinner, as it was the only bar to use if you did want to enjoy the evening entertainment.
The indoor pool is not very big and as the weather was not warm enough to use the outdoor pool was constantly full of children. For a couple without children this was not very appealing to us and not at all relaxing.
For a hotel that was only built very recently then I feel an additional restaurant and a greater choice of bars would have enhanced visitors enjoyment of this hotel more.
If you want a hotel based holiday and a get away from it all holiday then this hotel is for you. If you like somewhere to shop and things to look at during the evenings and a choice of bars and restaurants then I would not recommend Torrox Costa.
" This hotel is the best I have stayed... "
Submitted By: Mrs M weigelThe food is excellent, the waiters are always helpful and friendly. The beach is direct in front of the hotel, restaurants and the bus stop are 50mtrs walk and it is quite easy to arrange bus tours to Granda and Ronda, with a rented car you can do these trips yourself, Malaga is only 50km away. I can recommend this hotel 100%
" I have just returned from the Hotel... "
Submitted By: janep197The Staff were very friendly and helpful and the place itself was kept scrupulously clean. There was every kind of food on offer both at breakfast and in the evening.
Obviously we had glorious weather too which did help and we took many a pleasant walk down the promenade and stopped at a cafe bar for a drink and tapas while out son played happily on the beach right in front of us.
We all loved our holiday for New Year at the Riu Ferrara and will definitely be going back next year too!

The views from out corner apartment were dire - we were overlooking an adult bar, above a retail unit and opposite a pizza parlour. Straight opposite was an abandoned caravan with a dog tied up all day. We did ask to be moved straight away (after all this is meant to be platinum). We were offered a move mid week but were unpacked etc. Torrox sea front itself is full of high rise spanish holiday homes. Riu Ferrara is the nicest hotel in the area. The beach was nice and the people friendly. Just a shame the brochure doesn't show you more of the hotel before you book and gives you the impression that you are overlooking the pool. Won't be back again.
Advice: Very Quiet but friendly
Activities: Nerja caves
Good for: Beach
