I would heartily recommend turning...

Jan 2008, Ms A B

I would heartily recommend turning over the page if you come across this one in a brochure.
I agree with earlier reviews which comment on the attitude of the staff, which ranges from mild disinterest to downright ignorance. The bar staff in particular take the concept of poor service to a new level and seem to have been trained at Fawlty Towers.
The bar food is passable, as is the restaurant food if you can't be bothered braving the main resort for a night. The cleaning staff are non-existent and when they do appear they don't seem to understand what "clean" actually means, the rooms are filthy and outdated, and the comments made in earlier reviews about the state of the kitchens are all true - they are poorly equipped, the electrics are dangerous and the facilities are far too basic to be considered a 3 star apartment.
The beds are dire; they should have been binned years ago.
The pool area was clean enough and we had no problems getting a sunbed at any time. The general state of the apartments is disappointing and some areas are so old-fashioned you think they will fall down before the end of the holiday. The lifts in particular are interesting - easy to get little fingers jammed in as the lift doors don't close tight against the body of the lift, I wouldn't let children go near them.
I've only given this place a 3 due to the bar food being edible, and the fact that a free courtesy bus leaves 3 or 4 times a day to take you into Albufeira centre, although the last one goes at 5.30, which is a bit early to stop.
Many of the occupants of our apartments were complaining on the way home and I would agree with the general opinion that you shouldn't book these apartments if you want anything more than the most basic of facilities, and can live in dirt for a week.
The resort itself is OK, bit like being in Britain with sun - totally overloaded with English/Irish/karaoke pubs. Some of restaurants are nice, but nothing very traditional about any of the resort. We hadn't been to Portugal before and def wouldn't go back to Albufeira, but would maybe try somewhere else.
For anyone booking with Thomson, this might interest you. I submitted a review on my return and astonishingly, it has never appeared, yet they have many positive reviews on their site and have rated this apartment block a 3 star.
Don't fall for it; this rating is ill-deserved.

Just happened to call into the travel...
7 / 10
Oct 2007, Mr T.J. Burns

Just happened to call into the travel agents whilst on a shopping trip to the town centre and came across one week’s availability at the Silchoro Apts, Albufeira.
Decided there and then to book it. When we got home we looked at the reviews for this accommodation. Some were very good and some were very scathing in their condemnation of the place.
Naturally you tend to focus on the bad reviews and think you have made a bad decision, as we did. So we bit the bullet and off we set.
The transfer was a nightmare, a forty minute transfer took two hours and we arrived at the Silchoro at approx' 10.30 pm expecting the nightmare to continue but when we entered our apartment we were pleasantly surprised. It was quite spacious, clean, and tidy although the furniture had seen a number of years service but in general was ok.
All of the wall light lampshades had scorch marks on them where the holt bulbs had touched them but they worked. The apartment was maintained regularly and clean towels also supplied regularly.
The building and grounds are also well maintained and the pool area is very pleasant although there are not enough sun beds to go around if the place is full and some of them are damaged.
The pool side bar serves up nice snack food but the main restaurant is dull and dismal as is the menu and the food, ate there once, do not recommend it. The staff at the Silchoro are friendly and helpful.
The Silchoro is situated in a built up area between 10 and 15 mins walk from the main shops and bars, it has a very busy main road along one side, and constant road noise can be heard whilst relaxing by the pool.
Overall view, good enough to stay for 7 nights as a short break but would not stay for 14 nights as a main holiday.

The apartments were nice and...

Aug 2007, Miss Gd Kokans

The apartments were nice and spacious, cleaners came everyday but Tuesdays.
The whole resort was great especially the old town, lots of entertainment in the square, nice bars and restaurants. If we went back we would stay closer to the old town.
Silchoro is too far away from anything, about a 20 minute walk with no bars on the way which is what we wanted because the bar staff at the hotel were so ignorant, they take absolutely ages to serve you, I think I stood at the empty bar about 10 minutes one day until they eventually stopped talking to serve me.
We had a pool view room which we were happy with at first until the two dogs across the road started barking, every time someone walked passed they barked, woke me up quite a few times. I recommend for any curry lovers to go to The Royal on the strip. very nice.
Anyway I wouldn't stay at that hotel again but would definitely go back to that resort.

We are very sorry to inform you about...
3 / 10
Jul 2007, Mr Vonk E

We are very sorry to inform you about the bad situation of Silchoro Albufeira.
Apartments are very old and not clean, furniture should have been replaced at least 10 years ago. Beds are making terrible noises when you turn around whilst sleeping;
Not only you but also your neighbours wake up (also the next levels).
The kitchen inventory was not only poor but also of bad quality; the electric oven and cooking arrangements are very dangerous. The synoptically diagrams do not refer to
actual operating; e.g. if you think you switched on a cooking plate in the front it can happen that another plate is heated or nothing happens at all (so be very careful and check constantly).
The apartments are very noisy and the neighbourhood is not what we expect of normal social quality. We are very sorry if you have made reservations; we expect you will regret. But if you like noise whilst sleeping from adjacent buildings and or
Domestic services of local laundry and garbage trucks that is the place to be.
Cleaning service is a mess; we have never ever seen such a bad service in the last 10 years (independent of travel organisations or local circumstances all over the world)
The real value of the announced 3 stars are max. Between 1 and 1, 5.
The bed linen and mattresses were very old, sheets and blankets are not clean and the beds are not proper treated every day; so if you are looking to make up your own bed you are invited to make a reservation at these apartments.
We do not recommend Silchoro!

Jun 2007, Mr D J Mutchell

We arrived early in the morning to very friendly staff. It’s a very clean place, well priced beer which is great. The bar staff were great especially Katalina who always had a smile on her face.
I totally recommend these apartments to people of all ages, it’s not far from the main strip and they have a free bus service taking you to and from the beach, it’s a bit of a walk to the beach. I’ll be back there again next year as I had a great time.
A big thank you to all the staff that made me feel so welcome.

Jun 2007, Miss E Beecham

What a fantastic place! We arrived at Silchoro and the first impression was what a clean place.
We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist who was always happy to help with any questions/problems we had.
The rooms were very spacious. The evening entertainment was fun and the food and facilities were top notch.
This hotel is a perfect place for old and young alike with a free courtesy bus running several times a day to Albufeira old town and Oura beach (which is at the bottom of the 'strip').
Me and my partner have spent a total of 4 weeks at this resort and two of them were at this hotel, I would certainly recommend this place to a friend.
Overall we had a fab time at Silchoro and would certainly return. For anyone who's considering a holiday here I would recommend Zoo Marine, Slide and Splash and Aqua Show.

Jun 2007, Miss S Clare

I am absolutely disgusted with the attitude from the staff. They were very rude and implied that my boyfriend and I were staying there without paying because the new receptionist had only taken our passports and not our booking invoices!
The room was foul, and the linen on the beds was too! Very basic, which to be fair you do get with self catering, however this apartment is advertised as 3 * when really it should be 2!
It was colder than Iceland there, but to be fair you can’t blame the hotel for the weather, but you can blame them for the foul smelling heater that emitted a very moderate temperature!
Oven was broken and I emptied sand out of my towel by mistake on to the floor, which was swept up 3 days later!
Experienced some very odd noises, i.e. the lift that makes a growing noise all night long and the couple above us that decided to push there single beds together, dragging them along the floor at 2am!
Would never ever recommend anyone to go there, however in its defence we went in April which is the low season so therefore it may have a bit more atmosphere in the summer and not resemble the Shining!
Sorry if you have booked there!

I went to Portugal with my boyfriend...
8 / 10
May 2007, Miss A Allin

I went to Portugal with my boyfriend and his parents and we had a great time. The people were really friendly, especially the hotel staff at Silchoro.
There’s plenty of pubs, local and English, our fav was the "(Not all) Blues Bar" at the top of the strip. The owner was English and they all made us really welcome.
The 'Strip' is worth the walk to the beach and also for the pubs at night. Most pubs had happy hour on all day everyday, which was great!
Back to the hotel, our room was very basic, which is what you get anywhere when your self catering, but was very clean when we got there. The only complaint was that the cleaners didn't seem to clean very often, made the beds more though.
The food in the hotel was great, there’s cafe food in the day where u can get all sorts, light meals to sandwiches and at night the restaurant opens. We found the prices in the hotel were some of the cheapest around, for food and drinks.
There's a little train that takes u to the old town this is only 3 Euros and worth it. The Old Town was nice to, but is careful; it's a suntrap and was very very hot! This holiday was one of the best I’ve been on. Anyone that’s been to Magaluf and enjoyed it there will enjoy Albufeira.
Try to stay near the strip though. Montechoro, Sao Jao are both near the strip I think. Silchoro was a great hotel to stay in, highly recommend it.

May 2007, louise0208

We stayed in the 'Silchorro' in the Montechorro area of Albufeira 2 years back; it’s not on the strip but on top of the hill & about 5 mins walk away from the action. Not for those who have walking difficulties.
I was a single mum (first holiday alone) with a 6 & 5 year old & stayed for 2 weeks, it was great, and I'd go back again.
The rooms were huge, patio doors in lounge & bedroom, full kitchen including dining suite, microwave & freezer, 2 bathrooms (with baths) kiddie safe balconies (no bars to climb).
The pool was huge, clean, free sunbeds & mattresses to hire, children’s section of pool. the local cat (very well kept but over-fed) also came for a bit of fuss everyday and took a shine to the kids (we had to buy one when we came home!!)
Pool bar/restaurant with great food (that they will let you take to your room) weekly BBQ, friendly staff, 2 well stocked shops, games room, disco, cocktail bar, kids clubs.
I would recommend this holiday for families who want a safe but enjoyable surroundings.

May 2007, Mrs C France

Was a great holiday - such a nice place - great weather which my boyfriend enjoyed greatly and in which I got burnt - as always.
Apartments were lovely - people were always on hand to give us assistance whenever we needed it.
Food was lovely and decently priced. Pool was lovely, very refreshing in the scorching heat.
Was an overall great holiday, we were sorry to leave and are returning in 6 months time.

We arrived about dinner time to be...

Nov 2006, Mr N Watkinson

We arrived about dinner time to be told our rooms were not ready, however we went to the pool bar to have a drink until they were, and the pool bar staff gave quick and pleasant service.
The pool was very clean and big enough to have your own space, however sun beds were sparse which was not a problem as the grounds were well kept so we just put our towels on the ground.
We then went to our rooms which were well cleaned every day except Tuesdays with both towels and bedding, The rooms were very simple with few pots and pans which were ample for the cooking we did.
The bird bar was good with a very friendly woman behind the bar, the karaoke was brill. With two great hosts which get the guests up and singing which our family found out.
The apartment offer a bus service to and from the beaches, we were told the old town beach is best, we agreed and went everyday however the sun beds were 7.50 euros and the men who worked on them were very rude and didn't like you moving the umbrella to shade from the sun.
If you like a good night out and a drink then the strip is for you, it’s just a row of shops, pubs and places to eat.
All in all the apartment and the resort were excellent!!!!

Oct 2006, Miss D Stephenson

We arrive on 12th Oct 06 to a completely horrible place! We arrived at 11.30am to a scorching hot Portugal, which was fab!
When arrived at Silchoro, we were informed to leave our bags and go get a drink because our rooms were not ready! They would not be ready until 1pm. We all had to stay in our warm clothes until then! We all went into the hotel cafe/bar to get a drink, what a big mistake took us half an hour to get one drink! when it was suggested we got another I said that I was not queuing for half an hour again!
Eventually we got into our room (Studio) we walked in and thought this looks really nice, old fashioned and standard but nice, we looked in the bathroom and both me and my mother could have collapsed with the terrible smell, it was totally disgusting! Us not being complainers decided to just buy a lot of bleach and cleaning products to clean it ourselves. After the first day both me and my mother picked up a big bug! Both very, very ill for the full week, we hadn’t eaten anything and we believe that it was from the toilet.
The second night we decided we would have something to eat in the cafe/bar before having a couple of drinks and joining in the karaoke at the bird bar. My mum had a nice steak with chips and I opted for a baguette and chips. When taking the second bite of my Baguette for some reason I looked at the bottom of it only to find a dead fly with juices covering the bottom, by this stage I was totally disgusted and spoke to the staff, they informed me that they would not charge for my baguette but in fact still did charge us.
One week into the holiday we thought that our beds would have been changed ready for our second week, how wrong were we! Our beds were not changed once whilst we were there! Now in all fairness the room was cleaned every day apart from Tuesday and one other day that I think they forgot about us!
As for entertainment in this hotel, on a Monday night was Bingo although they cancelled that because there weren’t enough people attended the week before, Tuesday was a barbeque which looked good started at 7.30pm ended at10pm waist of 10euro, Wednesday night Karaoke (Fantastic guys who hosted) Thursday bar closed Friday Karaoke, Saturday night nothing, and Sunday night closed! (Beware the karaoke does finish promptly and as they say its because the police would be called) and the bar does not open a minute past 1am. There was also a night club in these apartments, but again it was never open for us to see! There was absolutely nothing to do for kids apart from run around the little gift shop in the main hall, how boring can that be for a child.
As many people do when they are on holiday they like to have fun, yes maybe we did go a bit over board and maybe did not come in until 6am some morning, but I don’t think we should get the dirty looks that we got. Funny I thought when people were on holiday that had fun! Not in this hotel!
On the other hand, we visited some lovely places old town, definitely worth trying the little cafe's there especially one if your coming from the beach up through the tunnel turn right and its down a little street on your left, they have a tout there that most of the time wears a bright yellow t-shirt (it called Algarvio) fantastic Piri Piri Chicken!
On the strip there were also some fantastic places one in particular called AL Garfo, if you kind find it definitely go in and say hello and get the best steak in town, its a family owned business and they are truly fantastic people, Karaoke in there is Saturday and Monday nights but get there early and be prepared for one fantastic night! We spent a lot of time getting to know this family and they made our holiday worth while!
Albufeira is a wonderful place and maybe when I return in January (to different apartments though) it will be a bit nicer weather!
