Are We Just Very Unlucky?
3 / 10
Aug 2011, disappointed of East Ham

Just returned from 2 week holiday in Gran Canaria staying at Koala Garden Suites. Found the staff very friendly and helpful. The cleaning lady was lovely but she didn't clean. Had cockroaches in the our rooms which meant we either didn't sleep or slept with the light on. The supermarket was closed which was a major inconvenience (it was too hot to walk miles with shopping).
Wouldn't recommend it.

My wife and I stayed at Koala suites in Jan 2010, First time to Gran Canaria, stayed in ground floor appartment in zone one, Appartment clean and well furnished, towels and bed linen changed regularly, Staff very helpful, weather was very good, but we found that the pools in the zones water very cold especially first thing in the morning but this was compensated by the large pool in zone two being heated. All in all a very enjoyable holiday so much so that we have booked up to return on March 1st 2010. Would reccomend koalo suites to anyone, go on give it a try.

Two of us stayed in Zone 2, room 261, for the last week of Jan 10. The room was ground floor, with patio, situated behind the little kids playground. There was plenty of space, 2 big beds. The kitchen is in a cupboard but was OK. Swimming pools and interesting plants everywhere.
Great place for a quiet holiday - when the little kids are calling in Spanish, German etc it somehow doesn't bother you and it was good to see them having so much fun.
Koala is near to the market (Weds & Sats) and Holiday World (a little kids utopia), 1 mile from the dunes, 1.5 miles from the sea. Local buses are cheap (E2 to anywhere) and good - so E2 to Palmitos Park which MUST be visited, and not only for the fab birds of prey display.

after reading all the bad reviews about this accomodation,i really was dreading going here, but how wrong were they.the accomodation was great,we were located in zone2 room 210,the room was really clean and tidy, bed linen changed once in week we were there and towels every other day.the week we were there it was very quite,we were the only british couple there, rest were mostly german and italian but this did not bother us.the only quibble i have was that you had to watch the dates on any food that you bought from onsite supermarket as we bought a few things that were out of date.the staff were really friendly and helpful,on our last day there they let us keep our room on until midnight as we were a glasgow flight and did not get picked up until 1.30am on the sunday morning, and they did not charge us,so a big thumbs up for that.i would most definately recommend this acommodation to any other brits going to gran canaria.most worthy of a 3star rating, and yes i would most definately go back.

Me and my two children 3 and 7 stayed at koala for 2weeks aug 09. The time of our life, were going back for 4 weeks next year - the whole of august and seriously considering moving here as they have an amazing international school. when i read the reviews i was dreading going especially being a single parent. not many english but lots of spanish and german and holland families and all for the better the english can be drunken louts and the language barrier just didnt exist,my kids had so much fun and played with everyone, they learnt some english and i learnt some spanish. my appartment was very spacious, and cleaned everyday with fresh towels every 2 days, but was always given more than enough towels and even when i locked the door and went out the patio the maid came to the pool to tell me so to ensure i had clean towels and bedding, superb service. highly recommend low cost holidays faultless and smooth all the way through.
had room on the pool which was what i requested the bad reviews i read dont make any sense, 5 pools a good price super market fantastic staff, 3 euros to playa ingles 4 to the beach, 7 to palmitos park, 5 to aqualand - what more can i say cheap cheap cabs, and the resort staff are fantastic. the resort is so secure its unbelieveable with onsite gym, entertainment and swingpark. 3* appartments with 5* service - perfect and i met familys on their 4/5 and 6th visit. this will be a yearly visit for me. i was in tears leaving. the only reason im scared to leave a review is because i dont want it ful of english people thats not what i go on holiday for. holiday world is a 2 minute walk away and excellent 20euros for 60 points and each ride between 3 and 5 points - cant fault the place - wish i didnt have to come home. time of our lives 10/10 - make sure u eat at faro II and tell them Rameiros mum told u and u will get a good discount.

  • Advice: dont listen to the other reviews.
  • Activities: el nublo in the faro II shopping centre was amazing and fantastic prices

Do not go here!

My partner and I were only staying here for one night thankfully. It was the worst accommodation we have ever stayed in. The receptionist that greeted us on arrival was very rude and grumpy however the following members of staff we spoke to later in the evening were most pleasant.
When we got to our room, we had to climb the steepest most dangerous stairs with a very heavy suitcase. The apartment stank of stale smoke and the furniture was not clean - there were stains everywhere. We had only been in the room for about five minutes and were subjected to very loud dance music from the people staying in the apartment below ours. It was so noisy you could still hear it when wearing ear plugs. We left the hotel at 1.30am for our airport transfer and the music was still going then.
We wanted to have dinner only to discover the restaurant was closed between 5 and 7 so we had to eat at 4.
TV is not an important factor for us when we are on holiday but there was only one English speaking channel out of a choice of about 25 - the rest were Spanish and German.
Although we didn't sit in on the entertainment, it sounded awful from our room and loud enough to wake the dogs of hell.
Not sure what rating this accommodation has but it doesn't really deserve more than two stars at best.

me my partner and 6 year old son stayed at the koala garden suites for new year 2008. The hotel is definately not a 4* as advertised on some websites it is more a 2*, we asked the receptionist what key the hotel is and he said not 4 maybe 3 key. The rooms are spacious but the shower and bath were very dirty and the decor needed updating. The food was the same every day cold meats for breakfast and meat or fish for tea which did not taste very nice. The hotel mainly catered for germans and we did not go to the entertainment at night so i can't comment on that. The beach is 35min walk away and about 4 euros in a taxi. I will definately not be returning to the koala garden suites.

Good cheap getaway!

Positives:
Quiet location-costs maximum of 5 euros to get to beach, nightlife etc.
Hotel very clean, only saw 2 cockroaches, in whole 2 weeks.
Beds comfy
Large apartment with sofas etc.
Balcony lovely to eat on.
Nice relaxing atmosphere.
Someone on reception 24/7
Negatives:
Aimed at germans like most hotels, but to be honest I think the whole island is like it so it seemed you didn’t have much choice. They still do nick the sunbeds aswell, we got early in the morning (like 8) and went to on site shop to get crossiants (so good-sell out very quickly!) and then put our towels down as when we got up again at say 10 there all taken, not being used though just taken!
Onsite shop more expensive than other local hotel one down road called VIVO, a lot cheaper on things like pasta etc, we used that a lot as we were on budget!
Nightlife not amazing, we were looking for quiet holiday but wanted some nights out as were 23, quite disappointed as only nightlife we found was in Kaspa and we got sold a rubbish bar crawl (PRs lie of course!).
But I suppose its what you make it…
We were actually surprised how much TV we watched, I think because of the nightlife and were lazy haha, TV is in Spanish or German with only CNN in English, so needless to say we were clued up on the latest headlines hahaha!
Shops are so funny, basically everything is for tourists so every shop you look in as exactly the same things!
We wanted to bring back some true spanish souveners but we ended up bringing back a "spanish" cigar and i found a spanish fertility statue, i kept seeing it everywhere so i thought thats the closest i was going to get!
Must do’s!:
Camel ride in dunes
Self tour of dunes, nudists to laugh at and great sunbathing spots as long as its not windy!
Eating at Grill Faro in Faro (where the lighthouse is)
Safari tour
Overall great little cheap get away for relaxing time, we went for 2 weeks but I think that’s too long for whats there we got abit bored. Review seems abit negative now I read it but if you have never been to Gran Canaria then go for it, lovely scenery and beaches, I just think once you have seen it you’ve seen it so I wont be going back but I have lovely memories and was very relaxed!

Me and my boyfriend have just...

Me and my boyfriend have just returned from a week at Koala Gardens and it is most definately not as bad as everyone on here seems to make it out! It's not worthy of the 4* rating it gives itself but is definately a very pleasant 3*.
The room was clean and comforable and we had fresh towels and beds made etc everyday but one during our stay.
Didn't see one cockroach or anyother nasty creepy crawlies at all.
The pool was lovely, cleaned regulary and a good size.
We were self catering and so didnt experience the food available, although we did have a sandwhich once which was okay.
The main problem we experienced was the fridge, it didn't work at all. Infact I think it was a complete waste of time even using it! To keep things even remotely cool we had to put it in the top freezer compartment, but even then things were not cold at all. It didn't bother us too much as we didn't keep all that much in there but a lady with a small baby next door to us was trying to keep her babys milk cold and couldn't.
Other than the fridge situation the overall room was lovely, clean and pleasant.
Nearby Faro (about 4 euros in a taxi) has some wonderful shops and lovely resturants which is where we decided to eat every night as we enjoyed it there so much!
The hotel is quite 'out of it', and so we mostly got taxis everywhere as the weather was so warm attempting to walk anywhere was impossible! but didn't spend anymore than about 5 euros going anywhere.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday and don't be put off by some of the reviews on here!

Please just ignore all the others...

Please just ignore all the others moaners on this site. I have just returned back from a 2 week self catering holiday and the Koala Garden Suites are really, really nice. The complex is really clean and attrative with lots of flowers and plants throughout. The complex itself is split into 5 zones and you can use the pools in each zones.
Yes, the complex is slightly out of the way, but it is 3 Euros into Playa Del Ingles and 4 Euros to Maspalamos beach. It is really close to a place called Holiday World which is a funfair and amusement complex with bars and restaurants and bowling - really good fun. The main waterpark is only 4 euros away and there are bus stops to Puerto Rico, Mogan and Las Palmas really close by which don't cost much at all.
I loved the contrast of being away from the hectic party zones with staying in a quieter and much prettier part of the resort. The restaurants and shopping complex in Meloneres (Right of the lighthouse) are really, really modern and clean. And a long complex of bars and restaurants along the beach at Playa del Ingles make a very welcome change too.
The walk along the beach from the lighthouse to Plays Del Ingles past the sand dunes is worth doing, and yes there are 2 nudists beaches to pass, but for God's sake when you are on holiday - who really cares???
It is my belief that the people who moan on these reviews have neither any imagination or an inability to enjoy their holiday.
The Koala Garden Suites are great and I would go back there again and again.
Incidentally for the whole 2 weeks the sun shone and the days were about 35 degrees and the evenings were really warm and pleasant, so ignore GM.TV weather reports.
Enjoy!

Hubby and i just got back from Koala...

Hubby and i just got back from Koala Garden Suites after spending a week there for our honeymoon and we really enjoyed it. After a last min booking we didnt read any reviews just hoped for the best and thats exactly what we got!!
As for cockroaches being in the rooms from some of the reviews ive just read, we didnt see even 1!!! When we arrived at the apartment it was 02:00am and the staff where really helpful. The vending machine in reception wouldnt work so they provided us with 2 bottles of cold water. Got to our room, really basic but we only needed a base so werent to bothered. Top sheet on one of the beds had a dirty mark on it and reception changed the sheets straight away when we told them which was great!!! Kitchen was in a cupboard and quite small but cute with a kettle, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and a hob with 2 rings. basic but who wants to cook on holiday, especially on your honeymoon!!!
Rooms where cleaned and fresh towels provided daily which was great, bathroom luvly size with a shower, bidet, toilet and bath. Room was air conditioned which was great because it was so hot while we where there, between 30 and 35 every day. luvly little balcony overlooking the pool and we where right next to the supermarket in zone 1 rm 105.
Went to Faro (lighthouse) quite a lot as there are lots of really nice restaurants and shops especially in melonaros which is really classy, not bad prices either. Beach is lovely, only 7.50 euros for 2 sunloungers and a parasol for as long as you need.
All in all a really enjoyable holiday and would reccomend koala to anyone looking for a nice relaxing holiday within good distance from trendy bars, restaurants and shops. xx
