Me and my family had a long weekend stay in one of the family rooms over the halloween period, we were greeted and made welcome as soon as we walked through the door, the staff was very nice, polite and welcoming. My son was not very well over the weekend so a member of staff made sure that there was plenty of fresh juice for him and only done him a small breakfasts.
Our room was nice, but it was a bit of a treck being on the top floor of the building, it catered for our needs and it was pleasantly decorated and linen and towels changed regularly.
Enjoyed our stay there so much that we have already booked another stay over the easter period for 2010.

My family and i stayed here for along weekend and have stayed at other hotels on iow, which were very nice!,this one on the other hand wasn't very nice!!
For starters we were greeted by a woman who came charging out telling me that i cant park there when we had just pulled in the place and it states on there website that it has a massive car park big enough for coaches, this simply isn't true!,what you see in the picture of the front of the hotel is it,every morning cars were blocked in and when we asked to get them moved you just got huffing and puffing,so it got to the stage that we just parked down the road for the sake of being made to feel arkward.
The food in general was poor and on the first morning we had there full english which was proberbly the worst ive ever had,i dont expect 5 star food at these places but when you get asda smart price sausages and bacon(which wasn't cooked properly) with 2 inches of fat on it,so my wife who at the momment is 5 months pregnant wanted some toast the next morning(for obvious reasons)that went down like a lead ballon and we were made to feel even more arkward and very frustrated!,plus the fact that when you our eating your breakfast you can look out into there stunning garden that is coverd in dog poo!!..
We stayed in a family room, which was supposed2be suitable for a family of 4!,it was very cramped for 3 of us,so i wouldnt have wanted to stay there with another child!,you would literally be tripping over each other!!.
The general feeling we had whilst we were there was that if you did have any requests you dare'nt ask as it would be too much trouble!!.
Also if you like to stay in places where you can come and go as you please without being hassled this is not the place to stay as every morning we were asked where we were going and when we came back in the evening we were greeted by the lady sat out the front chain smoking, who proceded to ask us exactly what we'd been doing all day!.It felt as if you were at home when your a teenager and having to sneak out before your mum caught you!! lol!!
so as you may have already guessed myself and my family would NOT recommend this b &b to anyone!!!.I hope you find this review helpful,as i wish we had been able to read one like this before we had booked!!

The Sands Hotel is a friendly informal hotel owned and operated by an island couple.
Directly opposite the beach on the Esplanade, the hotel is well maintained and spotlessly clean. Rooms are all en-suite and are comfortably furnished (some rooms are on the ground floor and some first floor rooms have private balconies overlooking the swimming pool and seafront).
Food is usual hotel fayre but there is a resonable choice for all meals and vegiterian options are available. Food is very tasty and service is prompt and friendly.
The hotel's bar and lounge hosts live enterainment virtually every night and welcomes non residents as well as hotel guests.
In addtion to the swimming pool and children's splash pool which is surrounded by a large patio area with sun loungers and chairs the hotel also offers a spa and sauna as well as on site beauty treatment (additional charges).
Coach parties and dog friendly the Sands Hotel is an ideal base for exploring the island and main bus routes are just a few yards away.
Hotel will happily book car ferry for customers and will also arrange a packed lunch for the return journey home.

Under new ownership, I feel the review by Hilary1 is most unfair. I had the fortune of staying at the Sandhill for a 6 month period whilst working on the Island. Kathy, Stacey and Steve could not do enough for me and other guests. They will happily book the cross Solent ferry for guests (at a reduced rate) and will try and cater for anything that guests require.
Contrary to other reviews breakfast was between 7am and 10am if required and was always served with a smile, and would be anything you basically asked for.
The Hotel was spotlessly clean and my room was more than adequate - a large double room, always a supply of basic toiletries and clean towels, colour tv and tea/coffee making facilities.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the Sandhill and judging by the fact that they catered for several wedding, birthday and christening parties I would say that I am not alone in my opinion. The 'new' Sandhill is up there with the best in its' class on the island, and Hilary1 I think you will find that the kitchen now has a 5star rating!

Although not to Hilton standards, this hotel was perfectly welcoming, well situated and quite well positioned in relation to the beach and town centre.
There is no entertainment as such but to be honest if you want entertainment you go to a resort at twice the price, so don’t let that put you off. Hope that’s of some help.

Sandhill Hotel , Hill Street, Sandown is classed as a 4 star hotel apparently by the Isle of Wight Tourist Board and on their web site.
When we arrived we were greeted with a very stroppy 'your early, I don’t normally let people have rooms until after dinner' I said we had managed to get an earlier ferry and she said we could have the room as they weren’t busy.
The room - small a pokey. Double bed, cheap white chest of drawers with a broken handle and a wobbly white wardrobe. The bathroom was tiny with a small shower complete with mildew curtain, sink and toilet and 2 overlapping pink mats on the floor.
There was a tray with kettle and sachets of coffee etc complete with a tea towel to wash your own cups. Breakfast was between 8.30 and 9. Food ok but definitely not service with a smile. Basic English breakfast.
Large lounge with TV was ok. There was a bar which never opened, no entertainment at all. We didn’t see the owners from one breakfast to the next. The hotel smelled strongly of vinegar, obviously used for cleaning?
Our bed was made daily but the tops and bedside table wasn’t wiped as the tea stain from when we arrived was still there when we left. The carpet wasn’t hoovered once while we were there and was covered in bits.
The owners were quite offensive when we asked for a receipt as we paid cash but they still had my card details. There was a garden seat at the front surrounded by dead plants in pots, a nice little pond though.
Overall we would never go back to this hotel. We booked on the assumption it was 4 **** but basically it was smelly, dirty, very unappealing and miserable owners.
Avoid this one - you have been warned.

I stayed in Sandhill hotel for 3 nights with my family (wife and 2 years old kid). To me it is a very nice and comfortable place to say. The staff members was very helpful all the times. The rooms were clean and tidy. Any help, any time.
I would definitely recommand this hotel.
