Outstanding Hotel - Worthy of its #1 rank.

"The Albergaria Dias is ranked #1 hotel in Funchal on Trip Advisor. This is why we chose this hotel and we were not in any way disappointed.

In my opinion the hotel is just the right size having 35 rooms. We were in room 303 which has arguably the best view of the ocean on this floor. With this limited number guests everyone feels special but more importantly attention to detail is maintained in every aspect of the hotel. The hotel staff are all lovely giving you the impression nothing is too much hassle. Cecilia greeted us on arrival and sat us down in the bar with a complimentary drink and we enjoyed a very well priced and presented tuna toasted sandwich while we waited for our room to be ready. I must say it was the perfect way to start our holiday.

The Airport transfer from Funchal Airport is ~20 mins and the hotel taxi driver was very kind and interesting to listen to. The rooms were a good size, clean and tidy - with good fittings, wardrobe space etc. Safe hire was reasonable and towels are available for the sun beds. A small but well equipped Gym room offers treadmill, cycling and other exercise aids. There is also a large selection of books that can be borrowed during your stay if space is tight in your suitcase.

One thing worth mentioning is that the double beds were two singles pushed together but perhaps more disappointingly they were also made up as two singles! This was not really what we expected after booking a double and I must say that the beds were rather hard with little mattress padding but don't worry, the solution is to lay the additional blankets underneath the protective cover - this made the bed more comfortable.

Good balcony furniture and an excellent view from the 3rd and 4th floor rooms allowed us to watch the sun go down while getting ready to go out. Hot water always available, modern air conditioning with thick shutters and heavy curtains made the stay in the room very comfortable.

Breakfast was a European buffet style breakfast with a small compliment of cooked eggs and bacon, pancakes etc - but the quality was in the uncooked breads, meats and fruit that was available. As long as you understand you are not going to get an English breakfast there is lots on offer and even new things to try. Personally I always take my own cereal and teabags but the juices, cereals and fruits were fresh and tasty. Breakfast service was amazing with everything being refilled immediately from 8am right through to 10am.

The bar has most label spirits with great service.

The location of the hotel in my opinion is absolutely perfect. It has a back path that comes out in the very heart of the old town offering many lovely restaurants including Chinese, Italian, rice, tourist and traditional.

We can recommend the Rice Only (Riso Risottoria del Mundo) restaurant just up on the left from the hotel - very classy, great sea view and well priced for the quality of the food and location. Also the Italian pizzeria straight outside the hotel back was our favourite restaurant serving really good pizza and pasta with lovely service. There is also a restaurant around the corner from the pizzeria where all meats are cooked in front of you on a charcoal burner - this was very good as well.

We try to stay away from the "tourist" restaurants but surprisingly there are a couple of them in the old town. The food and service in one of these was terrible and a huge contrast to the other restaurants just a few steps away in any direction. Many people seemed to eat in these two restaurants opposite each other but I cannot recommend them - the food was bland, poorly presented and served well before any drinks or starters arrived which in my books is big no-no.

A stones throw from the hotel is the sea front walk and contemporary art museum as well as the cable car station and some lovely shops. Further into the city there are even more shops and pavement cafes with plenty of banks, pharmacies and supermarkets etc - the ship restaurant (ex-Beatles) and bar is also nice place for a drink if you want to watch the sun go down.

In summary - the hotel offers superior service from a key location in the old town.

You can't go wrong with this one and we had a fabulous holiday.

Brilliant!

"Just like all the other reviews, we loved our week at this hotel. The staff are wonderful, the room and service excellent. I had a birthday while there and received a beautiful bouquet of flowers on return from breakfast. Nothing seems to be too much trouble.

We loved the island as well. Just right for relaxing and pottering around. We took one tour through the holiday company we booked with but next time we'll book directly with the hotel and shop around locally for tours.

The cable car is worth going on and the gardens are great. We're not walkers but might just be tempted to take a gentle walk through the amazing countryside next time.

Roll on next year!

Best Holiday for years

"Just got back from a fantastic 10 days at The Albergaria Dias. We were on our first visit to Madeira and chose the hotel after reading the reviews on trip advisor. It really is as good as everyone is saying, the staff are very helpful and friendly. We stayed in room 402 which had an extra large balcony with 2 sunloungers plus table and chairs, it gave us a fantastic view of the harbour and surrounding area.

As i found the bed a little hard we put some spare blankets under the sheet, on returning to our room later that day we found they had put a soft foam mattress on for me, thats what i called service! Room and hotel spotless.

We went on a morning catamaran trip and saw whales and dolphins it was absolutly amazing and i would highly recommend this trip. Also went up in the cable car which was very nice.

The 10 days we were there the age groups were very mixed, from mid 20's to late 70's, it was also a nice mixture of Brits, Dutch and Germans

Loads of good restaurants, We had a couple of meals in the Itialian restraunt owened by Reids hotel, tho expensive the quality and service along with the view were great.

Loved Madeira and the Albergaria have booked to go back next May with friends

Everything has already been said

"Having read all the reviews we were confident of having a great holiday and we were not disappointed. All previous reviews have got it spot on. However, we would like to recommend the pizza restaurant immediately outside the back gate. The food is of good quality at a reaonable price but you are more than looked after by Philip and his colleagues."

What can I say about this hotel?...

"What can I say about this hotel? Well, it is absolutely top class!! The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean (in fact spotless) and the proximity to the Old town of Funchal is brilliant.

You have a card pass from reception on arrival which you can use on the back entrance of the hotel and this takes you directly to the restuarants of the Old Town. It is approx 5mins walk to the Cable car and the sea front.

All rooms overlook the pool but it is worth spending that little extra cash and having the sea view. My husband and I were lucky enough to be on holidays when Funchal celebrated its 500 year anniversary and we saw a lot of the activities from the comfort of our balcony room (fireworks and the excellent air display).

I cannot recommend this hotel enough really. It would have been nice to have had tea/coffee facilities in the room but that is just a minor, minor niggle. If a holiday in Madeira is what you want, this is the hotel to stay in.

Ditto

"We have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Albergaria Dias and would completely concur with all the other positive reviews. The room was spotlessly clean and the towels were changed every day.The hotel benefits from being small as not only were the staff friendly but so were the guests. We used to chat to other guests in the evening after returning from the restaurants(the bar closed at 11-30)."

Absolutely fantastic!

"All the previous reviews were spot on. The hotel is clean, everyone is friendly (from bar staff to cleaners) and helpful. Making our stay one of the best we have experienced ever!

My wife had her birthday out there and received a lovely bunch of flowers from the hotel, with a letter wishing a happy birthday.

We booked directly with the hotel and found it much cheaper than going through a travel company.

The breakfasts are amazing, catering for european palattes, as well as the 'Brits' with bacon and eggs! And the fresh fruit cocktail is out of this world.

The hotel is very close to at least a dozen restaurants which serve very good food. The ones we thought had good food, wine, reasonably priced and excellent service were: Murahla, Portau, Le Jardin (which is next to another named differently which we believe are run by the same people) and a pizza restaurant (next to the chinese) made wonderful pasta dishes.

Buses, taxi's and cable car are easy accessible from the hotel.

The Levada walks are very enjoyable, but best to check before you leave to see if they are easy or difficult. I suffer from vertigo and was advised not to go on some of the walks as they are too steep.

We had twelve fantastic days of sunshine, relaxation and exploration. The Madeirans are very friendly and hospitable people and we seriously found it very difficult to leave.

We not only recommend this hotel, we believe everyone should experience this fine and wonderful place.

If we were to rate this out of ten, we would give it twelve!!!

Obrigado

A very enjoyable holiday.

"We have just returned from a very pleasant week at the Albergaria Dias hotel in Funchal. This is quietly situated in the old town only minutes from a pedestrianised street of reasonably priced restaurants and is also within minutes of the promenade. The Hotel is very clean, the breakfasts are varied and plentiful and the staff are efficient, pleasant and very helpful. We (two couples) thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

We didn't think much of the 'welcome talk' at the nearby Porto Santo, which we attended as it was our first time in Madeira.. Seated in a hot, stuffy room and kept waiting for 15 mins before it started, we were not given any information about Funchal. The meeting was just used to push trips and many of these could be purchased more cheaply from an information centre nearby or on the promenade.

Finally - be warned - information usually says there are no mosquitos in Madeira. Well this year there are and we all got bitten to various degrees.

Lovely place to stay

"All the positive reviews were spot on. The Albergaria Dias is a lovely fantastic place. The hotel is small enough to be very private but with the professionalism and quality of a much larger place. Everything from lovely bathrobes to breakfeast is excellent quality. We had a nice sea view room with balcony which was well worth the little extra. The staff is great - they really do go out of their way to make your stay special. The location is great as well - in the old part of town with plenty of nice restaurants just on the door step and nicely away from the over-touristy "hotelzone"

Would very much recommend Albergaria Dias for a lovely holiday

Just like they said

"I wasn't sure whether other reviewers were viewing this hotel through rose coloured spectacles but no, it was just like they said. The Albergaria Dias is a wonderful hotel and its staff are out of this world. They are all so nice and will do anything they can to make your stay a pleasant one. The hotel is spotlessly clean, the facilities are excellent, the other guests were also very nice and we got to know a lot of people in a short time."

Fantastic Hotel

"I stayed at this hotel for a week with my fiance. We booked our stay directly with the hotel and they arranged our taxi from the airport. From being picked up from the airport we found the Maderian people really friendly and helpful.

The hotel itself was absolutely fantastic. The staff where really helpful and professional. Once we arrived we enjoyed a welcome drink of Maderian wine and then we were shown to our room (which had been upgraded without request!). The room itself was lovely, the bed was really big and comfortable. The balcony had wonderful views over the pool and gardens and also looked out onto the Atlantic and Funchal.

The breakfast at the hotel was great, although my fiance was disapointed there was no beans! I found the pancakes especially nice.

All in all, no complaints and we would go back tomorrow. Both to Maderia and to this hotel.

Tip - Try to get out to Porto Moniz its spectacular.

If you're not looking for 5 star...

"If you're not looking for 5 star luxury, this is a super hotel. Small and friendly sums it up.

This delightful hotel is not on Funchal's hotel strip, but in the middle of the old town - this is a working area of the town, but it is a quiet location and there are plenty of first rate restaurants within a 5 minute walk, as is the cable car to Monte.

Rooms are not over-large, but are more than adequate - try to get one with a balcony and sea view for a bit of extra legroom!

The staff were all so pleasant that it was a joy to chat with them!
