Gran Hotel Costa Del Sol Reviews
" Short Visit in February 2009 "

Lovely clean hotel, spacious comfortable room. Excellent value for money.
Breakfast was varied and plentiful, but don't expect traditional "full English" (sausages and bacon were not at all pleasant!)
Dining room was crowded at weekend (queues in corridor), so timing is the key to a relaxing breakfast.
There were also queues in the evening although we didn't eat anything other than breakfast here - lots of bars/restaurants within walking distance of hotel.
Hotel has limited parking but there is some parking on the road and in a nearby carpark. The area felt safe.
Only about an hours drive from Gibraltar - well worth a visit!

Advice: Mijas Costa has a lovely beach and loads of bars/restaurants.
Activities: Gibraltar - is amazing! Only about 1 hour away by car.

Although Saga holidays have usually been of a high standard this hotel left much to be desired. As it included Christmas and New Year we expected to experience an atmosphere of celebration but this was far from the case.
Decoration was of the minimal only three meals could be described as celebratory, the 25th and the 31st and a gala dinner which is always provided on a Saga holiday, the other meals were inadequately heated and sometimes not cooked enough.
Other times salads containing easily recognisable ingredients offered at least two or three days previously.
The Staff were on the whole unco-operative, verging on rudeness when a complaint was made.
Rooms are good, maid service good but certainly something is lacking in staff provision and supervision, particularly in the dining room.
In all we consider our holiday a complete waste of a considerable amount of money, somewhere in the region of £2500 for one month’s stay.

I agree with Mr Dell in part,(not that I went with Saga) the food was not up to the standard of a 4 star hotel; and having the tables cleared and set for breakfast at 8pm when the restaurant is open till 9 is not on, as I pointed out to the management.. The out of hours snacks left a lot to be desired, as too the setting.
Room very good and the views worth a look as long as you are not facing east and have to over view a dried out river bed (storm drain) full of rubbish.
As stated by others this is a good jumping point for all the other resorts and days out.
As the pool was closed and the gardens being re-laid the only choice to relax if you stay at the hotel in the day time was as said a balcony over looking the car park.
I don't know what Mr Dell and others paid for their stay, but I thought is was on the whole value for money.
I is unlikely that we would return, but this is due mainly to the fact we seldom return anywhere as there are so many other location to explore (good or bad).

This was my wife’s first time abroad, and she was amazed, the hotel service and standards were great, the beach was just 20m from our room and the food was generally good just personal preferences are a bit finicky, always plenty of it though.

The staff were friendly and helpful, they helped to arrange for us a day trip to Gibraltar.
The only down side was the fact that, they shoved us out of the room at 8.30am and we had an 11.30pm flight back, and though our board basis was that we could have had a meal at 10pm and drinks we got nothing at 11.10pm.

On our arrival and couldn’t even purchase a cup of tea, coffee or even a sandwich, also the Spanish guests did not appreciate us and the entertainment was biased towards the Spanish but after all it is there country and there holiday resort.

We would go back again no problem.

I can not believe this is still in SAGA Brochure, La Cala is great village, quite modern but Hotel is now down from 4 star to 3 star and that is being kind. Food is awful & cold, it gets worse with every day - eggs cooked for you in morning only edible thing !!! Staff were great, after room maid change-over on third day the room was cleaned, but prior to that .... ! There is nowhere to relax - only plastic chairs & loungers ( with cushions for loungers though ! ) at the pool. The Bar / Lounge is dark & ‘dingy’ with a small long outside terrace overlooking end wall of some houses & the car park ! Beach next to the pool and quite nice - the village is easy walking distance 200+m away! Irish Bar great, do not bother with market unless you want some fresh fruit & veg, rest is ‘tat’. Hotel is not a place to relax - more a base to explore from - bus from village to Malaga, Fuengirola etc..
