Paleos Apartments Reviews
" My boyfriend and I have just returned... "
Submitted By: Miss J HamiltonWe stayed in Paleos Apartments in Ialyssos. The apartments are spacious, clean and well kept. Towels were changed daily if we left them in the bathroom (and not on the balcony to dry, as would be logical) and sheets were changed twice during the week. The balcony overlooked the road but I really didn't find it all that noisy or intrusive. You could barely hear it in the room with the window closed. As for the planes, they do fly over the apartments but, again, not as noisy as I had expected. Air-con can be purchased at reception (E40 for the week) but is only in the bedroom.
My only issue with the apartments was that they were most definitely not set up for self catering. We had one pot, one pan, a colander, some cutlety, plates, cups, glasses and bowls. However, no chopping board which I would have considered pretty standard for self-catering. Made it very difficult for preparing most meals as we didn't want to cut things up on the worksurfaces. For cooking, there was only a small hob. No toaster/microwave/oven and only a travel kettle for boiling water. The facilities were ok for just the two of us but I would expect it to be very difficult to cater for a family of 4 or more. As someone who has always stayed in selfcatered accommodation on holiday, it came as a surprise to me that the cooking equipment would be so limited. I'm making a point of including this because, as we are both students, we picked self-catered accommodation because it would mean we would have to spend less money eating out and have more money to spend on normal bought-in meals but we only ate-in twice and spent the rest of our time eating out. Let me add that this problem didn't really effect our enjoyment of the holiday and we loved the rest of the apartments!
The pool area was kept very clean during our stay and there were always sunbeds available. The snackbar beside the bowl was very nice and Georgina made us some *great* bacon butties on our last day. We ate at the main restaurant once during our stay and it was lovely. Proper homemade food with some complementary fried potatoes! We spent almost every evening back at the bar- well attended by Yannis and very reasonable prices!
The apartments are set out from the main town which I personally prefered but it was quite a walk to get there along a dangerous road which is obviously being developed at the moment so I'll glaze over that. We only ever walked through the town and never stopped for drinks but it seems very tourist friendly. There is a large supermarket a few 100m down the road from the apartments which has all the food you would need. The beach is a nice 10min walk from the apartments. It is rocky, especially in the sea so I'd suggest flipflops when walking about. Quite breezy too but this was very refreshing when we were sitting in the sun! Something like E7 to rent two sunloungers from the ladies down there...
We ate out almost every night we were there. I'm aware it's not very Greek but the Chinese restaurant down the road called the Hong Kong was very nice. The Rainbow bar at the beach was very good too. On the last night we walked at little further along the road, through the big junction in the town and past the video shop with all the big models (you can't miss it) and found this absolutely beautiful restaurant called Pardalos Kokoras (19 Iraklidon Av.). It serves gourmet Greek food and it was quite possibly the best meal I have ever had. It wasn't too expensive either! Anyway, please try it, so lovely with a very nice patio garden out the back to eat in!
Across the road from the apartments is a bus stop (at the moment, there's no sign to tell you this but if you ask the man in the sports shop he'll tell you were to stand and you can just flag down the bus). The bus will take you into Rhodes town for E2 (E4 return) and from this stop in town, is a kiosk where you can get buses to any of the big attractions on the island for very reasonable prices (something like E5 to Faliraki). We went to the Valley of the Butterflies which was very nice and filled almost a whole day. You almost go back on yourself with the buses to get there because you end up passing the apartments again on the way. However, it meant we could get off the bus on the way back at the apartments rather than going back to Rhodes again...if that makes sense. Anyway, the butterflies are definitely worth seeing and probably very good for kids. Aside from that, we spent most of our time visiting Rhodes Town. The Old Town is beautiful and very historical. Lots of touristy shops to practice your bartering in but also The Palace of the Grand Masters and the Knight Street which are worth a visit. I wouldn't suggest eating in Rhodes Town, simply because it's very expensive but we had lunch there several times and it was always nice.
So, overall we had a brilliant first holiday in Rhodes and the Paleos Apartments were a very nice base for us. The family who run the place are very hospitable and work very hard (maybe too hard!) to keep their guests happy. Georgina was more than happy to order us a taxi on the last day (E13 to the airport by the way) which saved us standing on the road to flag one down and she was brilliant with all the children who were staying. We didn't have to stay past the check out time but I did think the extra charge was a bit unfair. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday in a clean apartment with beautiful surroundings. However, if you want a proper self-catered experience, I wouldn't go here. It's a shame because the rest of the complex really is wonderful!

Submitted By: Dr J M D WardellIt is no wonder that many of the guests are regulars who come back every year and often two or more times in the same year . It is very pleasant on returning for holiday to bump in to the same people over and over again and to realise how much these apartments and the Paleos family are liked.
It is difficult to understand where the few adverse reviews have come from ...........are they serial complainers who always look for the worst in a place.
We will certainly continue to return here for our holidays.

Submitted By: Mr AM WARDELLThe pool is just the right size for familly and children and is very peacefull. The food is fresh and the service is with a smile. Dont be put of by the reviews of the main road at the front of the appartments, I could not hear traffic in my room nor by the pool and was far more peacefull than a busy hotel and of which most hotels are also next to main roads. No problem in getting a sun lounger by the pool unlike in the big hotels, Very relaxing.
My thanks to Georgina,Mike, Yannis and Maria for making my holiday very enjoyable.

Submitted By: Mr J CooperThe balconys on our side of the building overlooked the bar and road, so could be very noisy in an evening. Room was kept very clean except the balcony which was not touched throughout the holiday, hence a filthy balcony with dirty furniture. Nice but steeply sloping deep pool. Plenty of sunloungers. Pool bar serving good snacks and drinks at fair prices. The apartments are owned and run by a local family who are friendly and work very hard. Aircon is E40 extra for a week, and is only in the bedroom.
E25 for keeping room after 12 noon. There is not a curtesy room or shower. What a rip off!
These apartments are too far from any amenities. 15 min. walk to nearest town along a dusty dangerouse road with the obligatory half built pavements full of holes. Piles of rubbish and old building materials scattered along the route (something we noticed everywhere on the island to be honest). The town, Ialysoss, leads into the tourist area towards the beach. Lots of tavernas, bars, supermarkets and shops. The prices in these are expensive, and in our opinion the food quality in the tourist tavernas is poor value.
We were hoping for a Greek island holiday that we experienced when visiting other islands some ten years ago. Sadly we were very much dissapointed. This was an expensive holiday.

Submitted By: Mr Colin Colin And RontaThe location of the apartments is upwind of the airport but as said before this isn't a problem as they aren't directly above you and are weirdly interesting to watch come in and not that noisy.
The Paleos has a lovely front garden which also doubles up as their outdoor restaurant. It is one of the few buildings that is actually 'finished' and is low key but not unattractive. The rooms are reasonable and you do have to pay about 30 euros a week for the air cons(standard for many places) which we didn't use. The shower was excellent.
The swimming pool is a good size for the number of people staying there and there are enough beds to flake out on.
The family all have their different roles but their warmth and friendship turn up in everything they do and are the strongest element in the Paleos' offer - it's a slow burning thing but you really grow to like them and value this above any impersonal/cold experience you can get from so many other hotels. The family are easy going and never make 'jobsworth' decisions that irritate.
The island of Rhodes does everything else for you and altogether makes this a place to well worth considering.

Submitted By: Mrs C PetersSure .. the family are friendly enough, but Maria (the daughter), is only as long as you spend most of your time around their premises and spend money on their food - you can't cook in your apartment (all we had for 4 people was a small chopping board and one large saucepan!)
A few people we met loved it there and mainly because of "The family" - but without exception they never went any further than what Trianda had to offer. 2 or 3 had been going for several years to the Paleos and not even hired a car to see the real Rhodes. So .. if you have imagination - don't stay there!
God forbid you go out - the poolside cafe is strategically placed so that whoever is working there (mainly Maria) can see everyone coming and going from their apartment. You do feel a lack of freedom staying there, almost disapproval that you would dare to want to see more in Rhodes than the Paleos and Trianda!
The grounds were probably okay once but now appear rather sad, equipment dumped around, the grass looks like it's had a bad haircut and weeds were growing in many places, particularly the window boxes. It's impossible to sit out on the balcony - all face the main road (It's the main artery to the airport), with a view of several commercial premises the other side and a forceful strong wind, permanantly (Trianda is the windy side of Rhodes). Reception? There wasn't one, it's a cheap place to stay, so the reception area reflected it .. game machines and internet access, no-one mans it. The road is dreadful, only 20 metres from the nightime bar so constant traffic. Planes, you hardly noticed - though probably as the traffic noise was so loud anyway!
Rooms were clean, quite spacious, but watch out for an extortionate charge of 25Euros should you want to keep the room for a further 6 hours until 6pm when you depart! Which if you have an unearthly flight time, you have no choice otherwise.
As a family we tolerated this place, we expected no more as it was cheap. However, if you are a teenager on holiday with your mates, you'd probably get along fine, as Trianda village is a characterless 'non-place' with plenty of bars and clubs and Paleos should suit you if you want to spend most of your day time there after a heavy night out! Or, if you are like some of the people we met, who had no inclination to do anything but sit by the pool all day, eat lunch and dinner there, then spend nights in the bar - so hardly saw Rhodes, apart from passing traffic on the road, then this would also suit you.
The 3 out of 10 is for cleanliness of the apartment and the mother of this family (Georgia) who was a very sweet lady, but shouldn't be working so hard!
For us .... Absolutely never again!!

Submitted By: Mrs J CruickshankPaleos is situated about 10 mins from Trianda where there is some lovely shops and Tavernas. It is about 20 mins to the beautiful old town of Rhodes which is a must to see. Rhodes Town is easily reached by a frequent bus service or by taxi. The beach is about a 10 minute walk from the apartments and although it is shingle it is still very nice. There is a great pool on site at the apartments for those who don't like the beach. My family and I would highly recommend Paleos for a relaxing, enjoyable holiday.

Submitted By: Miss L WilkinsWe had a couple of hob rings and fridge, but there wasn't much in the way of cooking utensils - we got by fine for the two of us, but cooking for a family would probably be a struggle. There was also quite a large charge to keep the room later than the midday check out (25 Euro - and nearly out of season, so not all the apartments were full). But still a great place to stay, with lovely food, pool and bar.
The location was fab for getting into Rhodes Town as there was a bus stop across the road which takes you straight to the town centre in about 10-15 minutes for about 3 Euro. Also just a 10 minute stroll into the resort which had a great assortment of bars and restaurants (I recommend Jimmy's bar - very lively!). The beach was a few minutes walk and quite stony, but the pool was so nice I didn't feel the desire to leave it too much!

Submitted By: Mrs D ChandlerWhat a lovely family, Mike Georgina Yannis and Maria all go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Lovely food and nice apartments. There is a very busy road at the front of the apartments but the trees act as a barrier.
Lovely pool kept clean by Mike it was a joy to be there ,plenty of sun beds round the pool too. The hotel is quite small only two stories high and very pretty.
This was my first visit to Greece and I was really impressed by the Greek people.
Can’t wait to go back.

Submitted By: Mr J K JohnFrom our arrival we were met by Maria who welcomed us, booked us in and showed us to our home for the next fortnight. The room was as depicted on the website http://www.paleos-apartments.gr/index_english.htm and from what we saw of other apartments this was the standard through out. The rooms were well appointed and clean. They were cleaned daily and we had a bed linen and towel change three times during the holiday.
We opted for the air conditioning having visited several Greek Islands in the past we know how hot it can get. It was a well spent 75€ for the fortnight and worth every cent (penny). Even the locals were agreeing it was unusually hot. The system was able to chill the room to a comfortable temperature within half an hour or so. All of the apartments were double glazed so noise and temperature is easy to control.
Georgia (Mother) and Maria (Daughter) catered for all during the day. There was a good selection offered on the menu. There was also a large selection of soft drinks and ice creams all of which were very reasonably priced.
There were plenty of sun beds and parasols, enough even for people who were just visiting to use the facilities. The pool was kept in pristine condition and was big enough for all. If the children get bored after the first week there is also the pool table and big electronic game, be warned Maria is very good.
Michael (Father) appears to potter around the gardens during the day mowing, pruning and generally keeping things in order. However, his daily chores keep the grounds in excellent condition.
Michael also gets onto the grill in the evening whilst Georgia and their helper prepare the dish and between them they offer a fine selection of traditional Greek dishes. Again we would suggest it was very reasonably priced and good value.
Yannis (Son) keeps the bar alive and helps out with serving the food. He is always ready to have a chat and a laugh. He is also a bit of a football fan all of which help to “break the ice” when meeting new people.
As already mentioned it is close to the airport but that means a short transfer. The approaching aircraft didn’t fly in every day and when they were it never bothered us. It is 5€ for a taxi into Trianda or a 15 minute walk and its 8€ into Rhodes town. There is a good supermarket “Champion” about a 7 minute walk away.
The atmosphere is very relaxing and the Paleos family will go to great lengths to ensure you have a good holiday. We were chilled within a couple of days and were able to really settle in to enjoy the break.
Our daughter picked up an ear infection whilst we were away. We took her to the pharmacy were we were informed we would have to contact the Doctor. We spoke with Maria and she contacted the Doctor directly and he came to the apartments within 15 minutes. He wrote out the prescription and then noted the time telling us the pharmacy was closed. The Doctor phoned the Pharmacist and arranged for the antibiotics and drops to be delivered to the apartments all done and dusted within 40 minutes. Everyone’s willingness to help really took the stress out of the situation and within three days the infection was nearly cleared up and we were back to normal.
We met some fantastic people whilst we were there and by the end of the holiday had some new friends. However, we are hoping to encourage some of our other “Greece loving” friends to join us next year when we return.

Submitted By: Miss V SchofieldYannis, Mike, Georgia & Maria play a huge part in making the stay enjoyable. They are all so friendly and accommodating; they can’t do enough for you!
The pool was fantastic and pool side bar was very convenient - they did lovely breakfasts and lunches.
Another good thing about Paleos is that it's in walking distance to the nightlife in Trianda and you really don't have to worry about getting back to the apartments.
Finally, both families love it at Paleos and it really is a great place to go. You couldn't be more fortunate with the great family who go to great lengths to please you and make your holiday as enjoyable as possible.

The complex is run by the paleos family who treated myself and my husband like a king and a queen they are so lovely (thankyou Maria for being so good to us)we both fell in love with georgia the mother she must be the best cook on rhodes island and everything is so fresh (you have a heart of gold georgia).
From now on this is where we will always spend our holidays.
