having been to the astrid for the fifth year running there is nothing to fault the astrid for eva & dimitiris are wonderful hosts nothing is to much trouble for them the food is great the rooms are very clean we would recommend it to any wanting a good hoilday in a family run hotel instead of a large complex where you dont get that little special touch that you do with the astrid

Studio apartment was clean and basic. All in all considering we went self catering there wasn’t really that option. There was only one saucepan, a well used frying pan, a jumble of odd crockery and cutlery. A two ring plug in table top 'cooker', no toaster, no microwave, and the kettle was a travel kettle.
The food on sight was expensive compared to the local restaurants and tavernas.
The staff at the Astrid Apartments were pleasant and welcoming, although the owner could only be compared to Basil Fawlty, a definite candidate for charm school.
We found out on our home journey that 'Basil' was rude to us and others on a daily basis as we paid at the bar each time we had a drink rather than putting it 'on tab' and settling up that day or days later!
We have been to Crete before (Stalis - Koni Village) and found it a lovely relaxing experience where the people were lovely and the prices to eat reasonably priced. That’s why we returned to Crete - what a shock we got - or in reality what a laugh we had meeting a true life Basil Fawlty at the Astrid Apartments.
Would we recommend it - NO SYBIL - WE WOULDN’T!!

We stayed at these apartments for one week and I would say that this is not a family friendly place, apart from the pool there is nothing for children to do and this opens at 9.00 am and closes at 6.00 pm, the location of these apartments are in the middle of nowhere and the family that own and run the complex will take an instant dislike to you when you leave the complex to eat or drink elsewhere.
My family were very lucky that we met two other families and we all managed to escape every night to the next resort which is a bus ride away and costs 80 cents each way (the rep fails to mention this place to you), as for the fact that there is entertainment provided this is untrue, whilst we were there only one night was there entertainment and this was Greek dancing, the notice board states things that happen every other week so you are led to believe this takes place the week before you arrive or the week after you leave, in fact it does not happen at all!
Our first night began with us arriving just before midnight to find Demetrius and his wife Eva (the owners) behind the poolside bar (there is only this one), we asked where we could eat to be told everywhere was closed and their bar would be shutting at 12.30pm, good start I thought and from that moment on things went downhill all the way. Eva is the iron fist in the velvet glove and certainly has her favourite guests whom she treats very well but at the end of the day we are all paying customers, Demetrius on the rare occasion he spoke to us told us that he will not be using any holiday companies next year because he can make his living from the regular customers, all I can add at this point is that Aspro will do well to not use him as he does not give them a good name.
All in all we had an enjoyable holiday in Crete because of the hospitality of the local tavernas and bars in the next resort of Plantanias, please will Aspro and all the other tour operators avoid the Astrid crew as they will probably need to turn these apartments into a rest home for the elderly by next year as there is no fun to be had there.

I went to Crete in September and thought it would be great, but our 2005 holiday to Turkey was better.
We arrived in the middle of no where and were actually greeted with a smile from Eva. We got to our room which was fine but the beds a bit uncomfortable.
We had to wait around an hour for a bus to come so we could go into town and then we had to stand up with a 1 year old boy in our arms. The man gave us funny looks and made our holiday a misery as we didn’t eat at the hotel as it was too dear.
The entertainment was poor and so was the food. I wouldn't recommend this accommodation to you and your family.
The tavern eleven about a 5 minute walk under the walk way and to the left was a good place to eat with a play area, beach and a beautiful sun set. This was the best restaurant we went to.

Our stay at the Astrid hotel apartments was the best holiday my family and I have ever had. Nothing was at fault; ALL the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. The atmosphere within the hotel was great, no bad vibes at all.
The entertainment included, Greek dancing, magic shows and jazz musicians, all were excellent and brought everyone together. The food there was fantastic, authentic Greek cuisine, but nothing too different from English food, which was great especially for the children.
The owner and his family were fantastic, very friendly and gave us a lot of free food when we ate our meals. The music on a night was never too loud and always went off at a decent time.
The pool area and the rooms very clean, which the maids cleaned everyday without, fail. At the beach, Astrid Hotel had their own little part of the beach, a lovely atmosphere and the staff was always careful in warning the guests about the safety when in the sea. I had read some of the other reviews about their stay at the hotel and I was quite shocked that people thought the owner was unkind to people who didn’t eat in his restaurant. In my experience I found that he only wanted people to try his food because it was authentic, good value for money and was of the highest standards, he was never unkind to people who never ate there only couldn’t understand why they didn’t want to. Altogether it was no doubt the best holiday we have had and I am sure that we will return to experience another fantastic 2 weeks in Crete.
