May 2006, Mrs L Whatling

I would recommend this place for any family with children. We felt safe due to the security cameras around the apartments. Our children enjoyed the disco, snack bar and pools. We loved the marina that was just a 2 minute walk from our apartment.
Some people did complain about the food but we were happy with it. They served up a variety of food every day including salad, pasta, chips, mashed potato with fresh fish and meat dishes. A cooked breakfast was served every morning and you had a choice of cereal.
When we arrived we found the receptionist had a smile and was very helpful I think that makes you feel welcome in any hotel where ever you go so that made us happy from the start of our holiday.

Having stayed in all inclusive hotels...
6 / 10
Apr 2006, Mrs K Pearson

Having stayed in all inclusive hotels previously, we were very disappointed with the 'second class citizen' tag attached to us at this hotel.
If you paid for a cup of tea you got a pot and proper cup and saucer - if you were AI you got a plastic cup. The same applied when you had a 'glass' of wine or a beer - AI guests were always given plastic. The staff also certainly had a problem with us - obviously not getting enough tips or able to make on rounds of drinks. We found the staff very surly. I don't think they were used to AI clients and thought we were getting something for nothing!!
The meals in the restaurant were adequate. Sometimes good sometimes not so good but there was always salad!!
There was no complaint at all however, regarding the location of the hotel or the apartment we were in. The cleaning ladies were always very pleasant and the room was cleaned daily.
If I was to stay at this hotel again I would certainly go self catering. The town of Cala D'Or was lovely and the restaurants plentiful and good.

We were recommended this hotel by...

Sep 2005, Mr W Symons

We were recommended this hotel by family so had high hopes before we got there.
The hotel was nice and well kept, the pools were always maintained daily and being out of peak season was not that crowded. The main pool where the activities occur is also the best for children as the other pools were very deep.
The 24hour reception was always helpful and access to the safety deposit room was easy and averagely priced.
We had a 2 year old so didn’t use the show bar very often as didn’t open until 2030 but it did seem very basic and cramped. The days we did go we struggled to find a seat!
Our biggest gripe was the slop they served at mealtimes! Don’t get me wrong we are up for trying different cuisine but instead of laying on impressive buffets they laid on trays of fat!
Breakfast time we ended up just having cereal and toast and in the evening we would just have soup and salad.
The times we ate out in Cala Dor made us realise even more how basic our hotels food was, as the restaurants foods were delicious in comparison.
Don’t bother paying for sky (21 euros a week) as only 2 English channels both news!
Schooners restaurant is a lovely place for a stop off for a drink if you walk to the centre.
The smugglers on the marina was also good for drinks and had a variety of board games to play.
Don Leone restaurant was very good in the centre of Cala Dor especially the pizza!
Overall we did have a great holiday and the resort of Cala Dor was great especially the various coves. We found Cala Gran and Cala Esmerelda easily but Cala Dor cove was surprisingly hard to find until we bought a map.
If we was to return to this hotel it would be self catering and we would eat out every day !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I booked this as a last minute...

Aug 2005, Mrs RL Haywood

I booked this as a last minute holiday via teletext, so didn’t really have any time to read any reviews. Once I booked the holiday and read the reviews I have to admit I did panic, none of them are really that good.
We went for two weeks, myself, my partner and my 6 year old son. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes the food could have been a lot better, during the first week the food was shocking and I started to dread going down for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The second week after many complaints the food improved.
The holiday overall was great, my son really enjoyed it. The children’s entertainment is some of the best I have seen it is basically there 24/7 if you want it. although my son never went to the day time entertainment, the evening was great, and it was every single night, starting with a children’s disco and the a show. The reps work very hard there and I feel that they do a really good job.
The hotel room was always cleaned well and of a high standard.
We always went to the main pool, which I do feel could do with been a tad bigger, but then August is the height of the season.
The Marina was lovely I found that if you walk to the other side of the marina (5 mins walk) the food is far nicer and also cheaper.
Overall great holiday and we will be going back next year!!!!!

Accommodation was very good but being...

Aug 2005, Mr C Wheewall

Accommodation was very good but being all-inclusive was the worst mistake ever we were made to feel like second class . Being all-inclusive I was told that we had no rep and had to ring a phone number to which none answered. The food was reminiscing of school dinners but improved as the week went on. Breakfast was the best choices but we found it to be too early and had to queue for a table, most days.
The show bar if you could call it that was in what could only be described as an underground dungeon that could only hold about 50 people out of about 500. The grounds were well kept pools clean and the staff friendly.
The snack bar for all inclusive between dinner and lunch offered a box of some sort of cake and the ice-cream was small pots the cheapest you would find at any supermarket.
I would go again to this resort but not with children and NOT all-inclusive and I would NOT ever book with Medinland as long as I live.

Just returned from a week’s holiday...
10 / 10
Aug 2005, Ms M Gibson

Just returned from a week’s holiday to Cala D'Or, staying at the Puerto Del Sol Aparthotel. Very impressed with the quality of the accommodation.
Our apartment was near the main reception area and consisted of one bedroom with two single beds, hallway, bathroom, kitchen area and living area with French doors leading onto ground floor balcony. We literally could step outside the doors in the morning and be on our sun loungers, which were very near the best pool in the grounds. It didn’t get too busy, unlike some of the other pools. The surrounding grounds are beautifully maintained.
The marina is just a short distance away and really quite amazing looking. There are some very good restaurants. Our favourite was Blanco y Negro. Staff very friendly and food wonderful. A pleasure to sit there overlooking the marina at night. Cafe Piscis is right next to Blanco y Negro, and we enjoyed a beer or two there on quite a few occasions.
The town centre is on the other side of the marina and approximately a 15 minute walk. If you take your time it's a very pleasant stroll, but can be a bit tiring in the heat. The road trains run frequently to the centre if you don’t feel up to the walk. They take you all round the resort, which made for good sightseeing.
Alternatively you can take a taxi at a cost of 5 euro each way. The centre is packed with cafes and restaurants, and also a good selection of shops. It's also kept very clean.
The main beach in the centre is picture perfect, but is also extremely busy. We preferred to lie by the pool at the apartments.
All in all Cala D’Or is a beautiful place and well looked after. It's ideal for a family holiday. You won’t find any rowdy nightlife spoiling the peace and quiet. Would definitely go back there.

Puerto Del Sol is a large complex of...
9 / 10
Aug 2005, MarieD

Puerto Del Sol is a large complex of apartments, which spread out quite far from the main reception. Upon arrival we had to walk a fair way down the street to our room. We had a studio, which consisted of a huge lounge area, with doors onto a balcony. It was an end room so we also had 2 side windows making it very light.
There was dining table & kitchen area; this was well equipped although we didn’t really use it much. The separate bedroom was really spacious too, again with French doors and there was loads of storage space. The room was air-conditioned. Maid came in almost every day, although about 9.30 ish which was too early sometimes. Clean towels each time, but sheets weren’t changed.
Pools - 3 pools plus small kids pool. Basically the pools were not big enough for the number of guests. Main pool got really busy. Too many lilos. You could stand up in the water but definitely not swim in it.
Another smaller pool on other side of road, we didn’t try this one, as not many sunbeds. Best pool was at top of road to the left of reception (not on the plan given to us by reception though). Pools all seemed clean, but my partner did end up with an ear infection and had to go to hospital in Palma, along with another guest from our hotel with same, so perhaps not that clean.
Only the main pool has a bar/snack bar next to it, so from the other 2 pools you have to walk to get a drink or take your own with you. Also only main pool has toilets nearby, so again a bit of a walk from other 2 pools, unless your room is close by.
Location - Is really on the 'wrong' side of the marina. We had been to Cala D'Or before, so we knew this. You can cut down to the marina within a few minutes walk, there are a few bars, restaurants & shops. However the main marina restaurants and Cala D'or centre are over the other side of the marina. I would say from the hotel to the centre of Cala D'or is about a 15min walk at least. There are also lots of steps and hills near the hotel, so it wouldn’t suit everyone.
Sometimes we got the road train around to the centre, this goes on a round trip through Calla D'or and is the same price no matter where you get on or off - 3E adults & 2E children. A taxi cost 5E for same journey.
We were self catering so ate out all the time, but most guest seemed to be all inclusive, which I gather the hotel has only started this year. We heard lots of complaints - food very poor, only allowed ice cream during certain hours, people saying there were made to feel like 2nd class citizens. We only ate at the pool snack bar the first day and it was poor.
Can recommend Churchill’s at bottom of complex, near marina, run by English family, lovely food. Next door to that the Meeting harbour, also very nice, very friendly. Also a bit further along Cafe Piscis - nice snacks & ice creams.
2 restaurants we didn’t like were big one on corner just past meeting harbour, waiter very arrogant and unfriendly. Also a bit further along restaurant Blanco y Negro - expensive and worst meal I had. On other side of marina we went to Las Palmeras and Oporto both very nice.
In the centre of Cala D'or you are spoilt for choice for eating out, you do get really pestered by people wanting to get you in. We had good meals in A Taste of Texas Steakhouse and The Grillhouse.
If you get your hair done by the ladies in the street, make sure you agree a price beforehand as we were definitely overcharged by not doing so.
One last problem at Puerto Del sol is you have to check out of your room at 12.00midday, so if you have a night flight its a very long day. There is a shower room, with 3 showers, but it was really busy when we were in there.
Overall the Puerto Del Sol was very good though.
