Really friendly, family run hotel with growing facilities.
Needs a bit of a face lift with decor in main hotel but apartments were of a really high standard.
Paphos very busy for our taste preferred nearby villages.

I stayed at the Nereus hotel with one other family member from August 2006 for four weeks.
The Room: Although being on holiday nobody is going to spend all their time in their room, however this does not justify at all the state that the Nereus rooms were in. The bathroom in particular was the most appalling, the tiles from ceiling to floor were cracked, the shower curtain was filthy and appeared to have something growing on it, the pressure in both the shower and the sink taps were ridiculous (water is essential for hygiene in a hot country such as Cyprus).
However, the most annoying thing is that when you arrive you are given your keys with a plastic tag attached, this plastic tag is what activates the electric in the rooms, i.e- the air con, tv, lights and cooler for the water tank (which cost £5), what I don't understand is that you are not allowed to leave the plastic key in the slot when you are not in the room, therefore whenever we would return after a day out the room would be boiling hot, due to the air conditioning not being activated and the water was hot too, this isn't what you want in such a hot climate.
The Staff: The majority of staff were friendly and helpful, particularly the receptionist Tunda and the Scottish Restaurant manager Brian, who was always so jolly and welcoming (who has now left the establishment, and I cant say I blame him one bit!).
Two of the night time bar staff were particularly rude, and one even short changed me of £12 when I (immediately) brought this to his attention he yelled at me calling me "stupid" and "drunk" and reluctantly handed back my money.
The hotel owner(s) seen to be oblivious to all of this and more interested in getting drunk (the manager) in the bar across the hotel Papa Georges.
The Lift continuously broke down.
The food was not great, at which, the carvery night held on Sunday was probably the only decent night for food of the lot. They appeared to recycle food, one night there would be mousaka and the next as a starter would be chunks of Mousaka with salad-no thanks!
The pools are not how they appear at all on the brochure, they are dirty with leaves and insects floating on top, and the pools that are featured on the brochure, don't in fact belong to the hotel, they are behind the hotel and belong to the rented apartments there.
I will never return to the hotel, the only good point was its location- close to all amenities such as shops, beaches, restaurants and bars.
This review is for when I stayed at the Nereus for 4weeks from August into September and I am being honest and simply going by what I experienced during my stay, whether the hotel has improved in this year I do not know.

Had read reports of the hotel before we went. All said the same - shabby rooms shabby hotel, meals like school dinners, likened to a old folks home - all unfortunately appeared to be true.
Although the staff were great, they only catered for the majority of the visitors
with karaoke most nights.
We went over the Christmas period, don't know what its like in summer.
Good points - very central great location close to all amenities.

I enjoyed my stay at the Nereus Hotel with my wife and sister-in-law who had a single room next to us.
The kitchen standards are high and the food is well prepared. We are not large people and although the rooms are compact, as an ex R.N. officer, I was not put out by the compact nature of the room and bathroom facilities.
They were properly cleaned every day and I have done Rounds on board ship and could not fault the day to day standard that was maintained.
We were not bothered by the touts, and they moved on quickly when one of us told them to MOVE in a firm voice. We did not get ripped off in any of the restaurants and when my sister in law asked to see the fish before it was cooked, it was brought out in the arms of the chef and we could see it was fresh.
The no smoking facilities can be improved and the huge TV screen dominates the bar and should be removed. It could cause a football or Soap atmosphere and attract a smoking culture.

We had a two week stay at the Nereus at the beginning of October 2006. Our twin room was exceptionally small and not at all comfortable. The staff were very good, cheap but friendly labour in the form of Bulgarian students who were employed as bar and waiting staff. Cheap labour is now the order of the day in Paphos, and many of the locals are extremely upset and have been losing their own jobs because of the greed of the hotel owners.
This was our seventh visit to Cyprus and our sixth to Paphos, this rated amongst the worst accommodation we have had in the resort, although clean not much more could be said about our tiny room. Very down market compared with last year's stay at the Anemi Hotel which is not too far away.
We visited Paphos twice last year and 12 months down the line we couldn't believe the prices, for a pub style meal 7.95cy pound (just under £10.00) bought a 3 course meal that amounted to not much more than a small sample of each course.
The only meal we found that offered reasonable value was a Thomson’s Fish and Chip Restaurant just under 8 pounds Cypriot bought a substantial meal for the two of us, including a free pot of tea.
The Nereus has a reasonable location and the Harbour area is just a short walk away, this has always been one of our favourite places but not this time, we were constantly pounced on by TIME SHARE touts, very much like Tenerife used to be, we couldn't walk ten yards in the Harbour area without being accosted.
CONCLUSION:
Unless you use the Self Catering accommodation at the Nereus, forget it!
Be prepared to be ripped off if you eat out and don't rely on the Hotel food it isn't that good and you will still be paying around £9.00 a head for a school dinner type meal.
We will not be visiting our beloved Cyprus again, Kato Paphos (tourist area) has been totally spoilt by over building, the remaining open space, Lighthouse Beach is about to be built on.
What used to be an attractive resort with a quaint harbour has turned into an Urban Sprawl!!
Cyprus is far too expensive, we will be looking elsewhere next year.

Just returned from a 3 week holiday in the Nereus Hotel in a standard twin room on half-board basis, with Mercury Direct.
Rooms could do with a bit of a makeover but were very clean. Our room was north facing & had a tree right outside so consequently quite dark , also balcony tiny with no access to sun. Was very quiet though with no road noise.
Bathroom very clean with towels changed daily, although shower cubicle was tiny, would be a problem for people on the large side I would think. Plentiful piping hot water though at any time of day.
Staff were all very friendly, efficient & helpful and The Nereus is a real family run hotel. Apparently the owner also has a farm & all the lovely fresh fruit & salad was direct from his
own fields. Which brings me on to the food....
I thought the buffet style breakfast was the best meal-freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice & orange juice available every day as well as mounds of bananas, melon, tangerines, apples, grapefruits, fruit salad, bowls of delicious Greek yoghurt, homemade museli, sultanas, dates, piles of bread/toast, bacon, sausages, scrambled & boiled eggs & tomatoes.
Unfortunatley dinner was a bit too 'Englishyfied' for our taste-we had been looking forward to trying plenty of Greek/Cypriot food but it tended to be based around English
meals with the occasional moussaka thrown in! There was usually a choice between 3 main meals but as for you vegetarians- no chance! Quite often there was no vegetarian meal at all on offer. We found the evening meals were very greasy & salty & very heavy on meat. However there was always a big bowl of lovely fresh salad to balance it out a bit.
Paphos itself was OK, very English, & you wouldn't need to miss the footie game or episode of your favourite soap but much nicer than Limassol which in my opinion is a right dump!
Paphos's greatest draw is its proximity to the amazing Paphos mosaics some of which are almost complete despite earthquakes & the March of time. Also the Tombs of the Kings are pretty awesome. It's also very pleasant along the harbour though you are pestered daily by English touts trying to get you to visit various hotel complexes & telling you that you have won a fantastic, not to be missed, prize. They are mostly not very savoury looking characters, who can get a bit pushy/aggressive. Avoid!

Just come back from a fortnight at the Nereus staying in a one bedroom self-catering, but on half board. There was aircon in both the kitchen/dining and bedroom, the bathroom was better equipped than some 4 star hotels I have stayed in. Everything was spotless, and kept that way by efficient and friendly staff.
While there was not the range of choice of food that is sometimes available elsewhere, both my wife (Very English taste buds) and myself always found something we liked, well prepared, and plentiful. 'Baggages' comments probably account for this. - Oh yes, the menu did not repeat week by week, the only constant items were the Saturday Steak Pie (shades of Desperate Dan!) and the Sunday Carvery. No complaints.
The staff were always cheerful and helpful, any queries or problems sorted effectively. This is probably accounted for by the fact that the owner spends a considerable amount of time on site, and so the place does not suffer from corporate feedback syndrome, like so many places.
As to quiet, it was pre real season, but being about 100 metres away from "Bar Street", and with much of the accommodation away from the street, very little was heard. The rooms were double glazed, so if you want a quite night, you will probably have them shut and the aircon on.
Sitting on "my" patio of an afternoon, fortifying myself with the occasional sangria shandy (the heck with sophistication), I did hear the occasional Cypriot driver trying to prove a point, but it was surprisingly peaceful. There was less traffic noise than I had on a September stay at one of the large hotels near the "triangle", and very little of the racket normally associated with Brits abroad.
I will be going back to see if this remains true.
Being centrally sited, all of the local sights and sites and shops are easily within walking distance, and for anything else, the local bus service is cheap and regular.
We took a couple of trips, a "round the island" by coach, and a jeep safari to the Troodos. We didn’t book these via the holiday rep, having noted that there are plenty of alternative operators who do the same trips for about £10 cheaper. The guides on both were interesting and informative, especially Chris, the Horizon jeep driver who took us round the Troodos.
The only fly in the ointment, as ever, was the flight. The times were convenient and punctual, but the total lack of room reduced the enjoyment enormously. I am average height for a UK male, and while I could sit without my knees jutting into the seat in front (luckily the occupant didn’t choose to recline), I found that there seemed even less space to manoeuvre the provided reading matter so that it was where I could actually read it (All airlines please note - if no-body can read your advertising, you sell less), and of course, the in-flight meal was almost impossible to handle.

WE have had a really nice time at thr Nereus, we returned because we had been there in 2007, and had enjoyed our holiday. We were a bit dissapointed that we could not access the beach, as the area is being renovated, but we are in the process of booking at the Nereus for september this year, hopefully the beach area will be completed by then. Since our visit last year, the Nereus has had a makeover, new furniture in the lounge area and in the bedrooms. We could not fault the service, food and friendly staff, everyone was helpfull, and the guests we met were all friendly. We also liked the location which is central for all the amenities. Because it is a small family hotel there is no problems with drunken louts!!! We would recommend this hotel.
