I and my husband went to the Tryp for...

May 2007, Mrs Julie Keeble

I and my husband went to the Tryp for 1 week starting 18th April 2007 so been home 1 week and I can tell you we had a fantastic holiday.
Infact we came home last Thursday and went straight to the travel agents to book for next year.
We had read some terrible reviews before going and at one point even went to cancel and go elsewhere. If I had believed all I read about I would have missed out on the most fantastic holiday I have ever had.
I and my husband had our 1st holiday without the kids and we are going to take our 14 yr old daughter with us next time as she will love it.
The people we met were brill, lots of Canadians and they are so friendly and bubbly.
We met a lovely couple from Essex also and we never heard 1 person complain about any aspect of the resort.
The food was great the most choice I have seen in a foreign country, we only went to the buffet as it was so huge we wanted to try it all.
The thing that I will never forget is the weekly carnival type party around the pool where the entertainment is mind blowing, there was salsa music all day and dance lessons which all ages was eager to learn.
Even salsa on the beach, which reminds me the beach was wow beautiful nothing more needs adding for the beach it’s just totally stunning.
The room was clean spotless infact and was cleaned before 12pm every day the maids were very respectful of our belongings and although we used a safe that’s in all rooms I left my mobile laying round a couple of times and nobody touched it.
The staff are overworked and underpaid but not 1 of them was miserable, ever.
Tipping is not a problem at this hotel as I have read previously I never even noticed people getting different treatment for not tipping.
The gardeners are great also they made little gifts for the ladies like birds made from coconut tree leaves, and they put little flowers in the top and just walk up and hand it to you it’s so nice.
And so what if you tip them a peso (approx 50p) it’s a nice way to thank someone for brightening up your day, they don’t expect a tip and we even ran behind them to give the tip to them.
Well if you’re going to Cayo Coco this year I’m so jealous and I can guarantee you will be so happy you chose the Tryp.

This is one of the best holidays I...
10 / 10
Apr 2007, Mr J Gillyon

This is one of the best holidays I have ever been on. After a good but long flight we landed and walked into the beautiful sunshine.
Going through the passport customs took a while but it was only about 20 minutes to the hotel.
The hotel is gorgeous and not shabby as others have stated, maybe they went at the wrong time. The staff were friendly and the rooms were so clean, with white pristine sheets and very hygienic bathrooms.
The food was absolutely gorgeous, we had prawns whenever we could and they constantly varied the food. We always tipped them as there wage is so low it’s under £20 a month so you can understand why they serve the Canadians first as it is extra money for them, wouldn’t you do the same?
We got along really well with all the staff and became very good friends with some of them. As for the beach huts, we could see the kitchens at the back and they were very clean.
They beach was amazing and there were no swampy, unpleasant smells around the resort. We have just come back a few days ago so my review is pretty up to date.
My daughter went horseriding along the beach twice and it only cost £10 very good value for money.
This holiday is worth the money and we have made some great Canadian friends, none of them were loud at all, they were all really pleasant; the Cuban people are very hard working and very appreciative.
I was recommended to go by a friend and I am so glad I chose it, the place, weather and people were brilliant. 10/10.
Definitely go to this resort if you want some amazing excursions, and just chill out.

Best holiday ever! I wanted to write...

Feb 2007, Miss J Jones

Best holiday ever! I wanted to write this as I can't believe people have given bad reviews on the place.
Me (19) and my boyfriend (22) spent 2 weeks here and had an amazing time.
The beach is incredible very idyllic, just like the pictures.
The rooms are very spacious with nice balconies, fridges in the room and bottled water, satellite TV, good programmes to watch whilst your getting ready for the night time.
We didn't watch any of the shows as to busy chatting in the bar; there is a nightclub there, not fantastic, but good enough after a few drinks.
Always plenty to do and a range of activities taking place.
The food is fantastic; we ate at one of the many restaurants most nights, our favourites being the Cuban and the international- 3 courses, always delicious.
The buffet caters for everyone with fresh meat and fish cooked in front of you to your liking.
Would highly recommend this hotel to families and couples. Will definitely return to Tryp!

Well we arrived back from tryp Cayo...
4 / 10
Nov 2006, Miss B Gibb

Well we arrived back from tryp Cayo coco on Tuesday 21st November after spending 2 weeks there. I obviously reviewed this hotel as we had been told by the tour operator 1 week before that the hotel we had originally chosen had major building works and we were given a choice of three.
After a bad flight and rude cabin crew (can’t say all of them but certainly one) had thrown our dinner over our shoulder when pointed out it was vegan (as both of us aren’t) she said rudely that was all that was left!! We landed and soon forgot about the flight as the doors opened and the sun was shining!
We boarded the coach to what we thought would be paradise! How wrong we were.
First impressions certainly count!
The reception staff really could do with a lesson in customer service and a smile definitely goes a long way! Now these people are the first people that guests see after a long flight! Check in though was quite quick but the map they give you of the resort is confusing.
We arrived in our room 865 and though there was a damp air to it we thought it was clean and basic you can imagine our shock when we found out it was a deluxe room!! But to be honest you’re not really in your room a lot and after finding out other problems that some guests had we were very lucky!
THE BUFFET: a lot of choice but has to say something when they have a microwave there to heat up your dinner! The food stations where they cook for you in front of you are very good we lived on the pasta and stir fry!
SERVICE: now lets be honest us brits tip if we get a good service we don’t tip to get one! Well all I can say is that if you don’t tip you will be standing in the queue for ages waiting to get served! Now I'm probably going to offend some people now but the Canadians throw money at them every time they go to the bar so are always served first!
RESTAURANTS: you are allowed 2 restaurants a week and as we found out you can book these all at once. But as guest services informed us as the Canadians are only there for the week they get priority!! If you cannot get in to any restaurants then complain, we did and got 6 in the 2 weeks. Bbq was the best the gourmet is ok but don’t go hungry as the portions are small.
DRINKS: the drinks are strong and deffo not watered down but the down side to this is that they run out of stuff very quickly and what ever bars you go to the cocktails never taste the same twice. Also beware that the bar staff try and sell the stock on the quiet at cheaper prices that in the shops on the complex.
ANIMATION TEAM: god what a disappointment! After we have travelled to the Dominican Republic 12 times and their teams have always been very very friendly I was shocked that none of the animation team at this hotel really spoke to the guests. The daytime activities were poor and if you’re the type who would like to be asked to join in rather than just run up you will be waiting a long time.
Evening entertainment was very poor, shows very repetitive, though they did do a show called the romantic show and it was so corny that I must admit I giggled all the way through it. Another word of advice if you like the evening entertainment, then get there early as they run out of chairs in the theatre.
SHOPS: there are 4 shops on the complex. The main shop does not sell "lady things" lol if you know what I mean so make sure you take lots of tampax with you as they do not sell them in shops only in the pharmacy!
POOLS: there are 2 pools the big one where the "daytime activities" take place, while we were there the pool was so dirty that it had green slime floating in it they put some chemicals in it to clean it but they closed it. The sun loungers around this pool are very un-comfy and old and beware there are no umbrellas. The other pool is known as the quiet pool was 100% better it was so clean and nice comfy sun loungers, it also has some umbrellas!
THE BEACH: stunning beach but the first few days it was covered in sea weed as they had had bad weather but lots of sun loungers and shade!
EXCURSIONS: as we said this was our "cheapy" holiday so we only did 2 trips. We did the jungle tour its half a day and you get to drive your own speed boat and snorkel in a lagoon it was amazing and such good fun deffo worth it. The other we did was the catamaran, the experience was out of this world we saw dolphins in the wild jumping through the sea with their babies. Others we spoke to went on the sugar tour don’t be taken in there is NO steam train.
Another couple did the overnight Havana tour and said it was amazing but it was expensive, also someone did the overnight Trinidad and swam with dolphins they would deffo recommend it apart from the 31/2 hour coach journey. These can all be booked through the rep Manuel (who is ace by the way)
In whole yes we had a nice relaxing time and met some fantastic people but the hotel is old, shabby, and dirty and in desperate need of updating, but these are all things that can be changed.
If you’re looking for the "real" Cuba then don’t go to Cayo coco! It’s built just for tourists there are no towns and no locals are allowed on to it unless they work in the hotels.

Holiday was great, rooms were basic...
7 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr J Parry

Holiday was great, rooms were basic but could have done with a kettle in! Cubans are lovely people but have been tipped so regular by the Canadians that the Canadians are served first before anyone else! Beaches are fantastic, clear sea's with white sands "perfect".
We went on a 2 day trip down to swim with the dolphins on a coach, the trip was very long as we stopped at points along the way and also stopped off at points on the way back the following day, we felt the trip could have been done in 1 day and would have been better if they could have flown us down to swim with the dolphins and flown us back, the dolphins are fantastic, would highly recommend this!

Some of the restaurants in the complex had to be reserved if you didn’t want to eat in the main buffet, although the main buffet was great for me and my partner we did reserve the fish restaurant and we had a band playing music and moving round all the tables as we ate dinner, the food was good and enjoyed very much.
We also reserved a Cuban restaurant but when we arrived for our reservation we were told it was fully booked and we would have to eat next door, if we had wanted to eat next door we would have booked that restaurant so we felt that needed looking into!
The hotel is built over a mango swamp and there is an area of water which does smell as you cross over the bridge to go to the buffet restaurant, some days worse that others, the water is still and needs to be continuously moving I think!
Overall we enjoyed our holiday but a couple of small things like Canadians getting preferential treatment needs to be looked into.

After reading some other reviews we were very apprehensive about our trip, but we need not have worried. The flight, though long, was good and the transfer to the hotel short and well organised, despite the grilling of the immigration staff at the airport.
The hotel was well positioned on a beautiful white sand beach with shallow azure waters. Plenty of loungers and shade, perfect for a stroll along to the other hotels but beware of the wind masking the high temperatures, definite factor 30 country.
The room was spacious with balcony, bathroom and plenty of storage with two large double beds, kept scrupulously clean and tidy every day by our maid Naisy. The buffet restauraunt had a good variety of food, with lots of it cooked in situ by the hard working chefs. In fact although we ate at the specialist restaurants we found we preferred the choice in the buffet, especially the prawns and fresh fish. The evening entertainment was fantastic and the hard working entertainment staff were to be congratulated for getting the guests involved in several of the presentations.
True the hotel is looking a little weary round the edges, but the ever smiling and friendly staff compensated for any shortcomings, especially the gardeners who tended the beautiful flowers, lawns and trees. The birdlife attracted by these was special.
To make the most of the holiday you have to leave the cayos on the trips to see the real Cuba. We did the 2 day trip to Cienfuegos via Trinidad to swim with the dolphins and then back via Santa Clara and Che Guevara's Mausoleum and monument. Unforgettable (although the hotel Rancho Luna where we overnighted was best forgotten). We did deep sea fishing, catamaran all day (superb lobster/prawn lunch) and speed boating in the mangrove swamps. All the trips for two cost £505 altogether and every one was a great experience.
One word of warning don't go the 3rd week in March as the hotel was invaded by Canadian teenagers (about 200) all intent on drinking the bars dry at every opportunity. They were loud, rude, impolite with no thought to the other guests, several of whom chose to pay to move hotels rather than have their stay ruined. The majority of Canadian adults were disgusted by the behaviour and apologised for their country men.
Overall it was a holiday not to be missed and we came back tanned, relaxed and with a better knowledge of a different way of life

TRYP CAYO COCO, CAYO COCO, CUBA I...
1 / 10
Jan 2006, Miss LJ Taylor

TRYP CAYO COCO, CAYO COCO, CUBA
I WILL BE HONEST! I appreciate some people may think the hotel was wonderful, but I can honestly say it was a 0/10 for me.
First impressions of the resort was BASIC. I have been to Mexico, Dom Rep & was really looking forward to spending x2 weeks in sunny CUBA. I couldn't wait!!! Friends had been to Cuba (not this hotel) and praised their holidays, so I was really excited.
The journey there on the plane & coach was good. After checking in, it was a good 5 minute walk from the main reception area to our apartment block, which gave us a chance to see what the hotel was really like.
The hotel was spread out & set in a large area of land. However it was starting to get run down & could do with a good lick of paint, however the landscape gardening between the apartment blocks was always cared for well by the gardeners (with their trademark straw hats). They were always polite and would say hello.
ACCOMODATION:-
We reached our nice but BASIC room. I just had to keep reminding myself that the holiday was 3*. Whatever you do, don't go with high expectations..... The room had x2 double beds, dressing table, bathroom with bath & shower over head. The room was fairly clean but was just very worn out. The furniture had scratches all over it & the cushioned seats in the room had stained covers. This may have been spilt drinks or anything else.... - but I made sure that I did not investigate too closely. We did have a sea view (JUST) but we had wasteland directly in front of our room, which appeared to be a cut through for staff on a regular basis. However you could see the sea!!!
Overall impressions of the room was OK, it was not in a noisy area which we had requested and again was BASIC. Just don't go if you have high expectations.
MAID SERVICE:-
The maid service was excellent, they would always work around you in case you wanted the room to be done later etc.. Definitely worth the tip!
SWIMMING POOLS:-
There was a small adult area pool, a few minutes walk from the main pool area. This was a very quiet area with a small bar and appeared popular for couples, however it was always busy. The main pool areas consisted of x1 child area (hardly used, I saw adults in it more than children) but looked nice enough for kids to use if they wished to do so. Then very close by was a separate pool, however this was always really, really dirty. I think it was because it gradually sunk in depth, so people would often paddle in it, which meant rubbish (leaves, plasters, hair & general debris) would get trodden in. Not nice to see in front of you as you are having a nice swim!!! Then there was the main pool which had a pool side bar in the middle. It was always busy as it served food (chips, burger & hotdogs) which you would help yourself to & drinks. It had the same barman most days who was a lovely chap, however they really needed to have some more staff as it would get busy at times. The orange squash there was lovely!!! See there’s one good thing I have said - definitely a 10/10 for the squash!!!
FOOD:- I'm really sorry to have to start moaning again but the food was awful! I love my holidays & appreciate that you have or you get to sample some odd food (some good, some bad). Myself & my partner are not a fussy eaters at all! I will try most things, however this place was awful. Breakdown as follows:-
AM'S:- Breakfast in am's was ok. Standard type of thing as normal, fry-up type food, toast, croissants/cakes & fruit. Otherwise you could go to snack bar & order a toasted sarnie.
LUNCH:
You can choose from a snack @ snack bar (sarnies, well toasted sarnies - they don't do all on board advertised, the whole 2 weeks was the same. Only ham & cheese, tuna and then chicken).
Pizza restaurant on the beach - lovely. Could not complain/fault it. Service was gr8 but always busy so you have to wait sometimes for a seat.
Diner restaurant on beach(can't remember the name) - you can choose from burger & chips, hot-dogs & chips, toasted sarnie & chips, fish & rice/chips or they would have a special out on a buffet table which would often consist of a stew/curry looking dish with rice/chips/salad etc. YOU WANT TO HEAR SHOCKING - One day we were eating & at the main grill area of the kitchen which you can see (it pokes out into the restaurant area), whilst the chef/cook is flipping the burgers, there was a chap/maintenance man painting the archway above him. I am not joking - it really happened!!!! I had a good look in the kitchens whilst stood near grill area, you could see that plates were stacked up on shelves with burger baps & salad on. I guess they think it's easier to get the food out to customers when a plate is already made up, but surely this is not hygienic.
Buffet - never went, I'm sure was like the evening buffet however. Did not touch it!
Pool bar - burger/hot-dog & chips - you help yourself.

DINNERS:-
BUFFET:-Like with most all-inclusive restaurants you could only eat at some of the restaurants once per week. This meant eating at the buffet restaurant or as I did on a few times buying crisps etc. and snacking on them. The restaurant had a variety of things and again like most places nothing seemed to go with everything. It was all very strange. There was around 6 tables of buffet food in total if I re-call?, and the same day would have the same old things. Chips, fried chicken & pork, all sorts of fish, curries, rice (DON'T TOUCH THE RICE....I WILL TELL YOU LATER), vegetables & pasta etc.. There was a massive salad cart & x2 grills with fresh fish & meat cooked for you. These grill areas would do anything from all sorts of fresh fish to meat (steak, pork, chicken). Downside was queues (often busy) & BE WARNED the chap on the fish grill counter is a ladies man, he definitely tried hard for those tips. Bless him! No he was a nice chap but would come out with all the lines trying hard for those tips. Most days I would stick to getting some meat from the grill area (be warned they stick loads of oil on everything - they drown it without asking you) and get some salad or chips. The waiters/waitresses were always helpful and would get you drinks etc.. & bring to your table.
AL A'CARTE RESTAURANTS
There were 3 ''Al 'A Carte restaurants'', one was CUBAN which was fabulous. Service was superb, it was clean, meals were nice - I could not fault it really. 10/10 for sure!!! But down side was we were only able to eat there x1 per week.
SINKNESS;-
Around the end of my 1st week, beginning of 2nd week, I got really sick. Symptoms included sickness, diarrhoea, severe stomach cramps, fever. This happened AFTER eating in the buffet restaurant. I had fish (from grill bar) & rice. It was only after I was ill that I started to think...the rice was on the buffet tables in a bowl and was just being topped up by the chefs. When I had the rice & fish the rice had a mixture of cold & warm chunks. I picked at the rice, ate a little and just continued to count the days until I went home. Can you believe that - you spend nearly £1400 + for you & your partner to go to the Caribbean, only to wish half-way through the holiday it was home time. This meant the 2nd week of my holiday was spent feeling ill. I just could not shift the symptoms. Constant stomach cramps, sickness etc.. I lost weight which was gr8, but definitely not the best way to diet! We just counted down the days!!!!
BARS/DRINKS:- You could grab drinks from pool bars, pizza bar, beach diner, snack bar (it says 24 hr but you never got snacks 24 hr & the drinks often ran out (non alcoholic as well as alcoholic) & bar in main lobby area of the hotel complex. The funny thing was for days at a time they would be out of lemonade or cola, but there was always stack fulls to buy in the supermarket! Of course they would not buy it from there, they would just make us wait. Some nights its was awful, you'd get the round in and would have to go back asking what else people wanted as they would run out. It was a regular thing you would just not bother attempting to order a drink as they often were out of what you drank. When I think back to it now,. I just can't believe it. The managers one night were out with champagne toasting the workers and dishing out glasses of fizz to guests, which made me laugh.
SEWAGE SMELL:-
There was an awful sewage smell in the reception/snack area. I had read reports on it, but did not think it would be that awful. People would say it was sewage, the others would say it was stagnant water. I'm not sure which, but all I know is that it stunk to high heaven. You would be in the reception area & smell it. You would be in the snack bar and smell it really bad. You would go to the buffet restaurant & smell it. It was horrible. Not the sort of thing you want to smell first thing in the morning.
MOSSIES -
LOTS OF THEM. Remember to take your sprays etc. however I did and still got bitten. The hotel was trying to help and help by spraying something. I can only explain it as masses of grey smoke sprayed into the air. You would be taking a walk to the bar & ten you would hear it. A mini train looking thing would be coming up behind you spraying all this stuff. However it did help. But it seemed like they only done this every other day.
BEACH - The beach was fantastic! Sea was lovely and always warm and clear. Beautiful! The beach consisted of a watersports area at one end which was always busy, then as you walk along you would go past the restaurants/bar areas which again was busy. But if you continue walking you would get to the best part of the beach which hardly nobody went to. I'm not sure why....as it was lovely. Peaceful and quiet, yet you can still wander down to get a drink a few minutes away but it's like you get to have a section of the beach all to yourselves. It really was lovely...but you can't spend your time at the beach 24/7.
Overall I would NOT go back to the hotel & it has sort of put me off CUBA altogether.
Before we left we got chatting to people and many people had the same problem. All the same type of symptoms, some lasted a few days but some were like me and just could not kick it! Some were moved to other hotels after complaining (resort in general was cause) but I just could not be bothered. I thought why move when the next one could be exactly the same. The rep had told people this hotel (being Tryp Cayo Coco) was the best hotel on island! So why?? chance moving in case??? However when the day to go finally came, we met up with a couple who had moved & they said they got moved to a lovely hotel. Typical hey - it seems the Rep was telling lies.
Once I got home I was still feeling poorly - 3 weeks had past since I got ill and I was still not feeling too good. I went to Doctor's only to be told that I had SALMONELLA. Nearly 4 months later, I am still on antibiotics to try & clear it. All because of TRYP CAYO COCO. Not even the gorgeous beach makes me want to go back to that place.
I have requested the complaints procedure & I am still waiting! I know I have left it late to complain as just wanted to get home, get better and forget about TRYP CAYO COCO. But I think of all those poor people booking their holidays with their hard earned money and think somebody else could have the horrible holiday I had! Hence, why i have been so honest in this review. Ooppps I know it's been a very long review but wanted you to know about everything the GOOD (not much) & the BAD (lots).
I can only tell you my experience of TRYP CAYO COCO, others may disagree with me? Please make sure you read reviews before going any where, otherwise you may waste £1400 like I did.

Mar 2005, jomiles

Great hotel complex - but its a good job as its like being marooned on a desert island - no external shops, nearest bank is at a petrol station 6km away!
Rooms are fine - 2 double beds. Food in main buffet restaurant is repetitive but 4 a la cartes to choose from - Cuban one is excellent! Also pizza place, grill and pool bar to eat from at lunchtime.
Evening entertainment is pretty good. Place is mainly used by Canadians. Beach and water sports great and weather fab! Tour trips are expensive and it was just too hot to travel around.
