We have recently returned from two weeks holiday at 'Villa Karnagio', on the beautiful island of Alonnisos. Prior to booking the package with Ionian and Aegean Island Holidays, we had carried out extensive research into what villas were available to suit our needs.
One of our main priorities was that our villa would be within easy walking distance of local tavernas. We subsequently discovered what appeared to be the perfect solution.
On looking through the Aegean Island Holiday website, the 'Villa Karnagio' was described as being " 10 mins walk " from local amenities. This was one of the major factors in our final decision to go ahead and book this Villa.
Imagine then, our great disappointment when we arrived at the Villa in September, to discover that there were no immediate local amenities, and that in fact they were situated at the village of Kalamakia. This was a 10 mins DRIVE away, along steep and winding mountainous roads. To have attempted to walk to the tavernas situated here would have taken at least 30-40 mins along these demanding roads. We contacted the rep' and pointed out this misinformation to her and she agreed that it was wrongly portrayed on the website ( and still is, despite an email to them)
Villa Karnagio itself is a pleasant modern property, with uninterrupted sea and island views , and its own private swimming pool. More disappointment was to follow however.
The kitchen was modern but basic. It lacked such items as a microwave, electric toaster and washing machine. The cooking utensils were in a poor condition and needed replacing, as did the mishmash of drinking and wine glasses.
We were also disappointed with the lack of a few simple touches which would have made the whole experience so much more enjoyable.
For example- there were no plastic plates and tumblers for use outside around the pool area, also a basic cool-box would have been ideal for keeping drinks cool on the trips out to the local beaches.
On another note, the state of the spare pillows in the main bedroom were disgusting, due to heavy staining. Had to use the pillows from the second bedroom. Bed linen was frayed and worn.
The sun-lounger covers, pool-side were also filthy, and needed either washing or renewing completely. The two sun parasols were well past their sell-by date, being worn out and full of holes. We informed the rep' of all this and we were told that this was to be expected at times of ' quick change-over ' in the summer.
On a matter of safety, we discovered that most of the outside lighting around the pool and the entrance drive was not functional. When reported to the rep' we were told that " it was due to a faulty circuit and had been like that for some time "
We feel that the above points raised might appear to be a little 'nit-picky' to some people, but the bottom line is that for the amount that we paid for the holiday then the above mentioned is NOT acceptable. We paid half the amount for our holiday last year and there were no problems whatsoever.
On a final note - Beware! We discovered that the only ferry available off the island on the day of departure, sails at 06.45 am, resulting in a very early morning alarm call !
As you will appreciate, we will definitely NOT be booking a holiday with this company again.
