Monte Gordo itself has not changed much since the 1980's when it was at its peak. The same applies to many of the hotels some of which are in urgent need of updating. Thankfully the same does not apply to Alcazar which has been refurbished although it does retain some... more

The Hotel Alcazar is located in a cenral but quiet position near the wonderful sandy beach. The rooms are comfortable with air conditioning but no kettle. We were located on the 4th floor which was about right. As the hotel has only two lifts if you are in a room towards... more

My daughter and I (15) have just returned from Monte Gordo. The Hotel Alcazar was very clean. Pool a little too cold. However, the accommodation could not be faulted. Evening entertainment was limited and would not suit younger people. The resort was fabulous. Very... more

We stayed at the Alcazar which was very clean but the entertainment was very limited. The resort of Monte Gordo is not for those looking for night life. Plenty of restaurants and the casino is worth a visit but take some identification. You can catch a bus in to Villa... more

marvellous montegordo
stayed in hotel alcazar had wonderful time .standard of hotel was very good ,food was excellent . rooms were cleaned every day with fresh towels and clean bedlinen large pool with ample sunloungers .shady area under trees with hammocks nice to relax away from sun. large bar and tv lounge ,entertainment every night.staff courteous and friendly. monte gordo has a beautiful sandy beach , good restaurants and bars and a few shops .
too young at 40
Just back from this hotel, it is like something from Austin Powers (very 70's). Possibly the wrong time to go to this area of the algarve. At 40 we were at least 30 years younger than the rest of the hotel. The entertainment was appaling, if I hear happy days are here again I will scream. Not recommended for anyone with a pulse.
Lovely hotel, shame about the food
Lovely hotel, staff very polite friendly and helpful. Only problem was the food. Not a lot of choice and not very hot. Dinner was served from 7 PM, but that time was taken over by the Dutch Stampede, so its best to go to dinner after 8 PM, (dutch all in bar then, its happy hour!!!!, taking up all the seats and buying one drink all night). I can recommend The Seagull pub, where i befriended Fertnando the owner. Most welcoming and helpfull, and has a taste for scotch whisky. Overall we had a wonderful holiday (Februarty 5-12 2004) weather lovely people friendly, beach out of this world.
Enjoyed the Alcazar
Stayed there 2 weeks Aug-Sept 2003. Rooms were good, resturant was ok, but lacked a selection of main course (fish or meat 1 of each), didnt matter though as there are lots of excellent places to eat in Monte Gordo. Hotel well situated on the edge of the resort so is quite quiet, about a 10 min stroll to the beach. Pool area excellent but sun doesnt get to one side till about 11.30 am. for a family hotel though there were'nt any organised events during the day, no childrens club even for the mainly Portuguese who were there. English people seem to be in the minority in August If you have a car, parking isnt free but is secure. Overall above average for adults so would go back without hesitation.
great choice
We just got back from 2 weeks at the Alcazar and it was just what we needed. We went with 2 children aged 3 and 6. The hotel is as good a new since its refurbishment all rooms having sky and air con. Our room was like an Ikea showroom. We were however, the only English guests bar one other couple all guests were mainly Portugese and Spanish both very friendly. Would not hesiate to go back.
Great Alcazar
Just be back from Monte Gordo. Stayed in Hotel Alcazar. Great nice and clean hotel. One of the best hotels in Monte Gordo. Clean rooms, good breakfast, nice interior - retro look from the 70's. Want to go back immediately. Next time certainly Alcazar again. If somebody want information about Monte Gordo or other suggestions for the Eastern Algarve, don't hestitate to contact me. Hotel Alcazar: GO ON!
Excellent stay in the Hotel Alcazar
Just returned from two weeks at the Hotel Alcazar, great friendly service, good food and drink. The accommodation was clean and well kept with a daily maid service. A very relaxing and enjoyable break.
excellent
We have just returned from a brilliant holiday at the alcazar the food was very good (especially the fish dishes) I would recommend it to anyone !
Loved the alcaazar
Great views at top, brilliant pool area and outside bar facilities plus good breakfast area downstairs. Stayed here twice in season mainly Portugeuse (very pleasant) off season quiet mainly english and dutch older and quiet types.Nice interior decor retro feel 70's, bathrooms slightly grim/basic but generally clean. Stayed in Vasco da Gamma too pricey and too basic, this is one of the best.
Not up to Brochure Spec!
The Hotel Alcazar is currently undergoing major renovation work. If you are unlucky enough to be placed in one of the original 1973 rooms you will not find 3* accomadation. Rooms are damp and let every bit of building noise in. I was lucky enough to be allocated a new room and with the exception of a leaking toilet cistern it was satisfactory. The room did not have a sea view despite the impossible claim that all rooms do. Since the hotel is behind several other very large buildings, unless you are above the 5th floor, all you will see is the pool and building site. Food is basic but edible - it is certainly not what one would expect from a hotel purporting to be of 3* quality. Staff are friendly but unwilling to advise on locations outside the Algarve.
