The Hotel Alcazar is located in a cenral but quiet position near the wonderful sandy beach. The rooms are comfortable with air conditioning but no kettle. We were located on the 4th floor which was about right. As the hotel has only two lifts if you are in a room towards the top of the hotel at peak times there is a lenghty wait for a lift or a long walk down the staff. Rooms are cleaned most days and in general staff are top notch, both friendly and helpful. Breakfast is buffet style and was very good and as long as you do not leave it until the last halg hour dishes are repenished.Swimming pool has sun beds. We can strongly recommend Monte Gordo which is ver flat and has some good walks along the coast to the Spanish border. Ideal for couples over 40 but would suggest families may be better looking at another more commercialised resortin the Algarve or a different hotel in Monte Gordo which caters more for families. for us it was a very boom not having loads of children staying here. It was peaceful. If hiring a car be aware some company do not allow you to drive them into Spain or there is a premium on the insurance if you wish to do so.it is advisable to check before hiring. Also if you can put up with the early start a days excursion to Seville is unmissable. We would certainly stay at this hotel again. The guest are a mixture of nationalities with the highest proportion being from Holland.

My daughter and I (15) have just returned from Monte Gordo. The Hotel Alcazar was very clean. Pool a little too cold. However, the accommodation could not be faulted. Evening entertainment was limited and would not suit younger people. The resort was fabulous. Very laid back, full of restaraunts and some shops. The beach was impressive. The resort was not too commercialised. I would strongly recommend this resort and hotel, although if your looking for lots of entertainment and 'someone' else to entertain the kids, this place is not for you. It is ideally located, as you can visit Spain which is only 15 minutes away. You can also visit Tavira, a lovely town by coach/car in about 40 minutes. My daughter and I even went on a day trip to Lisbon. On the whole a brilliant holiday.

We stayed at the Alcazar which was very clean but the entertainment was very limited. The resort of Monte Gordo is not for those looking for night life. Plenty of restaurants
and the casino is worth a visit but take some identification. You can catch a bus in to Villa Real which is only 5 minutes down the road where you can get the ferry across to Spain
(10 minutes on the ferry). Plenty of fine sandy beaches in Mote Gordo but be aware you
could get bored in this resort.

Monte Gordo itself has not changed much since the 1980's when it was at its peak. The same applies to many of the hotels some of which are in urgent need of updating. Thankfully the same does not apply to Alcazar which has been refurbished although it does retain some 1970's style. The rooms were spacious with air conditioning, television and a mini bar. The beds were reasonable without being either comfortable or uncomfortable. If you have walking difficulties we suggest you request a lower floor when booking as on a few occasion we did have to walk up the stairs to our room as the lifts were very busy. The restaurant is a liitle cramped but we found the buffet breakfast to be good although it you go down after 9.15 then it get rather busy.It did not usually worry us as we were early riser. The guests are a mixture of nationalities with Dutch and Germans being in the majority. All were very pleasant. There were a number of English guests as well, a good mixture. Staff were helpful. Do not hold your breath for good entertainment as it was a low standard and best avoided. The hotel like the resort is more suitable for couples who do not want a lively holiday, but appreciate a wonderful beach,no larger louts, nice walks in a flat area and close proximity to Spain. You can also catch a bus or train(Train Station is 20 minutes walk from the hotel with an horly service)to Faro and resorts in between.During our visit there were only a few children staying at the hotel which resulted in peace and quiet. We were very pleased with the hotel with one or two minor disappointments and having looked around other hotels in Monte Gordo we felt we had made the right choice. We would recommend it to couples and would suggest you plump for the bed and breakfast board option so you can enjoy some of the restaurants in the resort for your evening meal.
